    Metric is base 10. Metric was actually designed from the bottom up to be logical, the US system came from all over the place and their relationships were established by a few rough standards laid down by ignorant monarchs. If I said "he's 3500 meters away" I'd know that he was 3.5 kilometers away without much thing. If you say "he's 18480 feet away" most people wouldn't know he's 3.5 miles away. It's just easier.
