Reconsider a prior answer you've received: I have a Lhasa Apso, which has a "double coat" (an undercoat) and is 100% hair. He is a non allergic breed since he has no fur. He does not shed, unless mats cause some hair to die and fall off which would only a few strands. His coat requires daily grooming and in the warmer months I cut it down for his comfort since his hair grows floor length. It also naturally "parts", just like a human's hair. Dogs hair is a similar component to human's hair. Dog's fur is very different from hair, which is why allergic people can't tolerate those breeds.

The hair is the stuff on the top of the dog, the fur bit is the soft bits underneath and between their paws.

Dogs that have double coats have fur. It generally only grows until the adult coat is in and then remains at a certain length. The undercoat is shed out and "replaced" each year.

Hair is single-coated and often, but not always, continues to grow like ours does and must be clipped (poodles) or in the case of terriers, hand stripped. of course, just like human hair, there is a genetic limit to how long it will grow and some single-coated (hair) breeds such as Maltese are not traditionally clipped.

According to this site afghan hounds have hair as well. It makes sense to me. If you look at the hair on these types of dogs and others, there is clearly some type of difference.

Certain dog breeds have hair instead of fur... the biggest difference is in the texture, how it grows, and how much falls out! Don't know much scientifically about it though. Generally, dogs with hair (instead of fur) will shed less, but they still have dander so there is always the possibility that any dog could flare up someone's allergies.

Dog with fur shed a lot more. Dogs with hair requiring grooming (hair cuts) and regular brushing with minimal shedding.

Dogs don't have hair, no dog has hair, they ALL have fur.

The follicle and structure of the shaft are completely different.

Here is a website with REAL info about the Coton.
