bread soldiers?

when we cut our bread to have with our boiled egg, we call the slices soldiers. where does this saying come from. my granddaughters asked me and i had to confess i didnt know. any one help please.

    Because they are (or should be) uniform size, standing firm and straight like soldiers do. Shoulder to shoulder. I love em.

    Tin or lead soldiers were identical and rigid and all looked the same when lined up in their box.

    Try toasting your bread soldiers and a smear of marmite on them (if you like it) before dipping them into your egg. Yummy.

    Perhaps because the toast racks we used to use would stand all the slices up in a neat rows like soldiers?

    Because they look like soldiers standing in rank on parade when you cut the bread.

    I don't have a clue. When we were kids, every Saturday my mom used to make us soft boiled eggs with soldiers. We loved it.

    Because when they are all lined up they look like soldiers stood to attention !
