I would give 'Water for Elephants' by Sara Gruen a read. It was quite enjoyable.
I also recently finished 'Double Cross' by James Patterson - it's a good series - but you'd have to start with 'Along Came a Spider'. I wouldn't discourage you - it's an entertaining series.

hm, there are many books out there that fit your specifications. I suggest Thunder Mountain or any tamora Pierce book. If niether of these help, try asking your local librarian for help.
