What is causing knocking noise in refrigerator?

I have a Kenmore refridgerator. Intermittently it makes a loud knocking noise. Before I get a service person out, does any one know what is causing it? Compressor? There are no temperature problems. Works just fine!

Update:

I do not have an ice maker. It is also intermittent so I do not think it is a shelf or bottle making the noise in the fridge. Help!

The knocking could be the damper if it last for about 5 seconds when the compressor turns on or off, or it can also be the refrigerant gassing off in the evaporator this sound can be really intermittent, but is normal with the refrigerants used today. there is a page in the owners manual devoted to noises your refrigerator can make.

    SOLVED!!!

We had this same problem with our Kenmore refrigerator. It would make this slow (pretty loud) knocking noise that sounded like it was coming from the freezer side of the refrigerator and it turned out to be the ice maker.

    CAUSE:

In the summer time if the freezer door is left open for too long the ice cubes in the ice maker tray start to melt and then when the freezer door is closed the ice cubes freeze together into one big block of ice so that the little fingers that rotate and push the ice cubes up out of the tray and over into the ice cube bin cannot rotate. The loud knock is caused by the gear jumping a tooth because the ice cubes are frozen into a solid block of ice.

    SOLUTION:

Fill a small cup with very hot water and slowly pour it into the ice maker tray (where the ice cubes form) this will allow the individual ice cubes to separate and the next time the ejection fingers rotate they will lift the ice cubes up and out of the tray and they will fall into the ice bin. No more loud knocking

If the above method does not work unplug the refrigerator and open the freezer door and use a hair dryer to completely melt the ice that is in the ice maker tray.

If this continues to happen your ice maker might be over filling the ice tray in which case you will need to have it serviced/repaired.

The knocking noise you report is probably the compressor shaking when it turns off. Does the noise only last for a second or 2? I'll bet it does. This is very common with many older refrigerators. The frig I currently have does exactly this. It's usually caused by the rubber in the compressor mounts shrinking, becoming hard or loose compressor mounts. The worst that can happen is that this shuddering can eventually cause a gas pipe to fracture.

If you have a plastic pipe feeding water to the fridge, be sure that it is taped or secured to the back of the fridge. Water hammer in the line will cause the pipe to move and rattle against the back of the fridge. Try turning off the kitchen faucet rapidly and see if this causes the knocking noise.

My Kenmore fridge is a 2015 model and it has 5 loud knocks, stops about 6 seconds, then knocks 5 more times a little less loud.... all when the icemaker dumps ice and starts to refill it's tray. I'll see if I can purge the line.

I had the same problem, Simply open the front panel and vacuum out all dust from/on the compressor and radiator! the noise (knocking) is gone!!!!

Is there anything living in your refrigerator?

That little guy that turns the light off inside when you close the door wants out 'cuz there's nothing to eat in there.

If you have a water/ ice dispeser, you may have an air bubble in the system. Run the water dispenser for about 3 minutes until the air is removed.
