When will politicians put country before party?
We have lost focus so much. It seems all we do is discuss the best way to approach an issue and emphasize what our party's view is, rather than actually doing something. Will we ever be able to put our differences aside, compromise from both sides, and make a real difference?
ok, no shots on individual parties (david). i was hoping to get real answers, not lame insults (false ones at that).

Politicians will start putting country before party when 'We, the people' start putting country before party. They are us. To stop the party elitist mentality, it is our civic duty to care enough to stop re-electing them. If we continue to be lazy about our involvement in the political process, we'll continue to get exactly what we deserve.
It also has not helped that part of the master plan of Bush's band of thugs over the last 8 years has been to keep America divided so its citizens would be distracted while the 'Decider' and his cronies committed high crimes and raided the national treasury.

Never, because it's the support of their party and interest groups that gets them the nominations. A good start would be to abolish the current primary system, but that of course would be up to the party leaders to do. The new system would allow everyone in the country to vote for their party's potential candidates, instead of this current system that leaves the later primary states unable to vote for who they want because the early states determined who would drop out and who takes the lead. The nomination should be determined by one day of voting, not many days spread across months.
I hope it changes eventually, but I won't be holding my breath.

When the moderates come out earlier in the process.
When elected officials put the interests of their country over their accumulation of more power.
Maybe, we need a new party, a more moderate party.

McCain does:
"I do not seek the presidency on the presumption that
I am blessed with such personal greatness that history has anointed me to save my country in its hour of need," said McCain, "I seek the presidency with the humility of a man who cannot forget that
my country saved me."

as long as we live in a society where we are aloud to dissect everybody for the way they live so, the politicians will do what they do if it means votes.
