When Ionic compounds dissolve, they split up into ions. For example, AB(s)= A+(aq) + B-(aq). Ions can be found on your periodic table of elements. When you break up an ionic structure into its ions it is called dissociation. There are positive and negative ions-Negative being Anion and Positive being Cation. For example, Sodium is Na+ and Chlorine(I think thats what you mean, not chloride) is Cl- if you put them together. (NaCl= >Na+1 + Cl-1)

Sodium ion = Na+
aluminum ion= Al3+
chloride ion= cl-
iron(II) ion= Fe2+
iron(III) ion= Fe3+
