What is the reason or purpose?

500mg will do just as much as 1000mg. To be truthful, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, and Aspirin are pretty useless as painkillers. They tend to have almost no effect on physical pain...and are only moderately helpful, mostly in treating FEVERS!

NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are pretty useless. The only ones that are very good are the ones like Ketorolac, and Diclofenac.....The problem with these effective medicines is that they (and all NSAIDS including Ibuprofen, Aspirin) can cause stomach upset and BLEEDING. These medications are very hard on your stomach so do not take a high dose. Stick to a moderate (medium) dosage and take it with a glass of milk and food to lessen the chances of stomach upset and bleeding.

For your pain, I would recommend you see a DOCTOR! then maybe you get something better for your pain and you can get ontop of it!

If you are stuck and can't see a doctor you can get Tylenol with Codeine. You can buy this over the counter in Australia (I think, or at least you used to be able to) and Canada. Tylenol is easy on your stomach and the small amount of codeine gives this type of pill a little bit of an advantage over tylenol alone.

Try to get it without caffeine if you can, because this can keep you awake. Do not exceed 1500mg of Acetaminophen per day. I know the limit is about 2000mg but I think 1500mg is as high as you should go.

If you live in the UK you might be able to get Dihydrocodeine of some sort which is also good for pain.

If you can't obtain any Tylenol/Narcotic mix then just use Ibuprofen but do not use the 1000mg. Stick with 500mg and then if you are still in pain, take another 300mg and stop after that.

    Good luck.

Source(s): I believe the Australian form of Tylenol 1 is called PANADOL. I'm not sure which version it is, there is Panadol ultra, panadol forte, and all sorts of different types. So find one with Acetaminophen (tylenol) and codeine as the active ingredients. Just look on the back of the package or ask the pharmacist.

I do and it hasn't hurt me so far. I don't think the people who say that 1000 mg doesn't work any better than 600 or 800 mg.. I can tell a BIG difference. And the people who say it only works for fever and not pain are flat out WRONG. It's been like a miracle drug for me. It takes care of most of my pain or headaches (usually much less than 1000 mg) and once when I had the flu, it took away the fever and body aches so much, I almost felt well! One time I was at my doctor's office and he was giving me a prescription for 800 or 1000 mg pills of ibuprofen. When I mentioned the safety warnings on the over the counter bottles, he dismissed them as ridiculously conservative.

    What is ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Ibuprofen works by reducing hormones that cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and treat pain or inflammation caused by many conditions such as headache, toothache, back pain, arthritis, menstrual cramps, or minor injury. This medicine is used in adults and children who are at least 6 months old.

Ibuprofen may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

800mg is the max recommended at any one time. Make sure you take it after a meal. If you have to use 1000mg, that means Ibuprofen is not working for you, you need a new pain medication, go see a doctor

I have used IBU for many years...and I used to chew it like candy...

I have taken as much as 3200mg, (4-800mg) with no ill affects. Take it with food and water or other soft drink.

I do not recommend that you do that much on a regular basis, but being unable to move let alone walk SUCKS.

The affects on the kidneys is LONG term, but the other posters are still correct. If you need to go above 1600mg on a regular basis then you should talk to your doctor.

I also have a prescription for cyclobenzaprine, but it is worthless. I will soon move to Tizanidine to see if that muscle relaxer will work for me.

Not true. I can tell a big difference in 800mg - 1000mg. Dr's write prescriptions all the time for 800mg pills or 1000mg pills. I am sure they don't do that just for the fun of it. I would think abusing or daily use of that much would cause harm like anything else.
