Did you know that you lose your GI Bill benefits when you leave the National Guard?

I received a letter in the mail from the VA stating that my benefits ended Dec.31,2007 since I ETS'd in July of 2005. Luckily, I had a few years of Active duty under my belt but, it only extended me 4 months. Now that they found this "glitch", the letter was also to inform me that I owed THEM $400. Reason being is only due to the fact that I faxed over my DD214 and NGB22. This is the repay I get for serving 7 years 10 months in the Army. I wanted to pass on this tid bit of info to any servicemember looking to use the GI Bill...if you're unsure ASK! If I would have known then what I know now, I would be extremely greatful. Take all the schooling you can and REAP THOSE BENEFITS!

Have to agree with Phil here, there is something missing in your story, and maybe even you don't know what it is. The GI bill is not a simple cut and dried program, it can be rather complicated at times. And I am certainly no expert on it.I would suggest you visit a VA councilor.

With GI Bill being federal and National Guard being state, this doesn't surprise me. You weren't in the Army, you were in the Army National Guard and from what I recall serving with them for 5 years of misery, lol, those benefits are only during an active duty period. Student loan repayment continues on until you leave the Guard.

You should do some more digging because that's not true! You get 36 months of GI Bill benefits and you have 10 years from your DOS to use it.

I have a friend who just got out of the navy, after 12 years, and he is still receiving his GI Bill bennies (hes going to school) and I think his 'retirement' from them (I wanna say 25% of his pay while there), not to mention his VA bennies.

maybe its different with the NG, but I am thinking there is more to this story....

You don't lose your GI bill Benefits, you get a percentage of the full benefit based on your reserve status. NG is a reserve component.

you're able to desire to consult section protection council in the present day! i do no longer understand if an OTH discharge negates a prior honorable discharge, yet ADC could have the flexibility to respond to this question. they are able to additionally advise for you and notice in the event that they are able to barter a generic discharge quite of OTH.
