depends on where you live... i live in MS and i've already cut by backyard

I usually cut it a little more frequently than that.
The time of year doesn't matter, if it's a nice day, and the grass needs mowin, and there's a cold beer readily available, by all means, mow away.

Really, when it needs it. I'm in Georgia and have already cut the grass. I like a uniform look to my lawn.

I would do it in April because you will be cutting it soon after because its coming nearer to summer and you will want to hang out in the garden more.

This is by no means meant to be a wise @ssed answer but wait until it's about six or eight inches high then mow.Save the clippings for mulch in your garden.They are invaluable there.
