A question about the 10 commandments.....?

If god thought being gay was so bad, why does the 10 commandments say "love thy neighbour" instead of "thou shall not be gay" ?

Update:

wow! funny how people think of sexuality as sex.....

if i was gay, but got stuck on a deserted island with no one around, do i stop being gay......?

if i stop thinking about god because im thinking about eating my lunch, does that suddenly make me non-religious?

im not having sex right now, my "sexual preference" hasnt changed......

please stay on topic, this was a genuine question!

Update 2:

definition:

covet : transitive verb~

to wish for earnestly (eg, covet an award)

Im to wish for my neighbour?

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Matthew 22:39-40) ...

so now im just confused......im sure im not the only one.......

because gayness is really not much of an issue in the Bible. The concept of homosexuality was shaped during the 19th century. Of course, there have always been gay people though. The Ancient Greeks accepted and even condoned it.

I think most societies have encouraged heterosexuality though because without it we could not propagate as a species. From an evolutionary point of view heterosexuality has to be the norm. That is not to say homosexuality should not or does not exist. It is just from a general and overall perspective, not something that most societies have chosen to normalize. I think now with all we know it is in our best interests to normalize homosexuality. It isn't aberrant. It is a common sexual orientation that millions of people share. I think we should know better now than to castigate people for being gay. and besides the Bible also supports slavery and the mistreatment of women as being 2nd class to men.

i think people have to read the Bible for the big picture and the wonderful overall messages of universal love that it teaches. to get nit picky over details that were a product of that time in history makes no sense.

Being "gay" isn't listed as being "so bad", it's just listed as being a sin. There are a lot of sins not listed in the 10 commandments, and the greatest commandments are not even given in that list although the list does summarize, or clarify them.

Mark 12:28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"

29 "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

Just because a sin isn't listed in the "top 10" doesn't mean that it isn't important.

James 2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

The Bible teaches that ALL have sinned and fallen short of God's glory but if we turn from our sins and trust Jesus for our salvation then God will give us his Holy Spirit who will enable us to live new lives no longer characterized by besetting sins.

1 Corinthians 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor covetous, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor abusive people, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And such WERE some of you! But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

To understand God's law, you can start with the 10 commandments, but you cannot stop there. God filled the entire books of leviticus and deuteronomy with statutes and commandments that were to be observed.

homosexuality, like any other sexual sin, will eventually be practiced if it first occurs in the mind. Jesus explained that the thought life precedes the act itself. So as you think, you are already guilty. You are trying to pretend that lust is love, and that you are innocent just because you pretend you do nothing about it. You have already played the scene in your mind, so you are already in sin.

"Love thy neighbor" has nothing to do with having sex with them. Homosexuals may call lust love, but it still does not qualify as the kind of love that God wants people to have toward one another. Playing with the word sexuality just means the sex act is already in your head, and it has not been acted out yet.

The 10 commandments in my bible doesn't say that, in fact it says "You shall not covet your neighbors house or any of his possessions." Trying to 'stretch' this to any concept of love, as in a sexual context is absurd. Even if God had placed "thou shall not be gay" into one of His 10 commandments, I am quite sure that it would be disobeyed or distorted as is often done today.

In Lev 18:22 God states thou shall not lie with mankind as he lieth with a woman its an abomination, and because he states Love thy neighbor as thyself that does not mean to go lay up with the same sex,or your mother ,brother, sister,Love is not used in sexual content here,he means you are to treat others as you would want them to treat you, pray for your enemies and always be there for people not to have sex with the same sex,and because you eat your lunch that does not mean you are not religious,by the choice of being gay you are refusing God God is not in that mess, and no you are not to wish for your neighbor, you are to live a life pleasing to God,and what you are doing is not pleasing to him study to show yourself approved,God is not the author of confusion he makes plain as day how he wants you to live, again Love thy neighbor is not of sexual content read 1 Cor13 its the basis of what Love is God bless and advice Repent of you ungodliness and ask him to come into your heart and show you how to live,he made man for woman not man for man or woman for woman and your were not born gay God does not make you that way its a demopnic spirit thats holding you in bondage

  • Those are two separate things. Loving thy neighbor has nothing to do with sex. It means treat others the way you want to be treated, always. Your question is just a little stupid, honestly. You are grasping at straws here. If you want scripture that condemns homosexuality, I will give it to you. From the OT and the NT.

Firstly, Love is not the same thing as lust, sounds like you are a bit confused about love and lust, for instance you would love your daughter or son, but would you lust after them? If so there is something wrong with you, so would your question not be twisting the words in the Bible? You should also take note that there are several kinds of love and it is only one kind of love that includes lust(the love between husband and wife)Read (Romans1:24-29) it might help you understand about lust.

The choice to have un-natural sex is man's doing....There are any number of references in the Bible to tell us unambiguously that to God this is abomination........this ' lusting after strange flesh' called homosexuality will result

in harm to your body ...your soul ....and your spirit

No human being is comfortable in committing this sin and so they keep asking if the do anything wrong and are hoping to get some assurance from others to the contrary....the effect of this sort of a life style is already taking a toll on their peace of mind

It is not in the 10 commandments but it is in the bible that, it is WRONG AND ABSOLUTELY BAD to be a gay/lesbian. God did not create gays and lesbians. He created man and woman. If you are going to read the bible there is also a story there, (old testament) about two boys who loves each other (eros love, if you know the 4 kinds of love) the other one is gay. From what they did, they are punished. IT IS ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN TO BE A GAY/LESBIAN. Try to read the bible...

The Homosexual Life-Style—Just How Gay Is It?

Out of the closet and into the headlines. That is the current trend for homosexuality. Books, plays, movies, television programs, and news reports publicize it, usually as an acceptable alternative life-style. But just how acceptable is it? What does it involve? Does it live up to its designation as “gay”? And what about those who resist it? Are they narrow-minded? And God, does he find it acceptable? What does his Word, the Bible, say about it? These are important questions, in view of the propaganda for its acceptance.

    A Life-Style Unacceptable to Jehovah

Homosexuality is not an alternative life-style acceptable to Jehovah God. Frequently, both gay and liberal preachers twist the scriptures in futile endeavors to make it seem that it is. (2 Peter 3:16) Thousands of years ago Jehovah destroyed Sodom because most of the males of that city practiced it. (Genesis 19:4-25) Centuries later the apostle Peter likened men who copied those Sodomites to “unreasoning animals born naturally to be caught and destroyed.”—2 Peter 2:6-13.

In unmistakable language, both male homosexuality and lesbianism are condemned by the inspired apostle Paul: “God gave them up to disgraceful sexual appetites, for both their females changed the natural use of themselves into one contrary to nature; and likewise even the males left the natural use of the female and became violently inflamed in their lust toward one another, males with males, working what is obscene and receiving in themselves the full recompense, which was due for their error.”—Romans 1:26, 27.

Paul also wrote: “Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom.” (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10) Other Bible translations render the expression “men who lie with men” in various ways, as follows: sodomites, perverts, sexual perverts, homosexual perverts, homosexual perversion, and just plain homosexuals.

    A Happy Life-Style Without End

There is nothing gay about the gay harvest. It can be avoided by listening to Jehovah: “I, Jehovah, am your God, the One teaching you to benefit yourself, the One causing you to tread in the way in which you should walk. O if only you would actually pay attention to my commandments! Then your peace would become just like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.”—Isaiah 48:17, 18.

Some psychiatrists and others, however, say that homosexuality cannot be “cured,” even by religious conversion. Very difficult, perhaps, but not impossible. The apostle Paul showed this when he next said: “And yet that is what some of you were. But you have been washed clean.” (1 Corinthians 6:11) So it was done by early Christians. And it has been done today. It will yet be done by others who turn to Jehovah for help: “For all things I have the strength by virtue of him who imparts power to me.” (Philippians 4:13) Therefore, “strip off the old personality with its practices, and clothe yourselves with the new personality, which through accurate knowledge is being made new according to the image of the One who created it.”—Colossians 3:9, 10.

Jehovah hates what is bad, but he is ready to show mercy to individuals repenting of their wrongdoing. Jehovah’s Witnesses also hate the bad, including their own fleshly imperfections, but they do not hate themselves or other individuals who do the badness. Hate the sin but not the sinner is Jehovah’s precept and also that of his worshipers. The Bible writer Jude says: “Continue showing mercy to others, doing so with fear, while you hate even the inner garment that has been stained by the flesh.”—Jude 23; see also Psalm 97:10, Matthew 5:43-48, and Romans 7:15-25.
