The food network website has some great idea for fancier cold sandwich and finger foods. I think that Semi Homemade actually did a show on it and they do show it often again. Another idea is see what your local deli can do for a deal. Fruit always seems to go fast and they can do some really elegant set ups with the fruit that also add to the decoration. I just did a huge super bowl party for 45 people and do you know what everyone raved about? I got a large sub from Walmart and cut it up in thin slices. Everyone kept asking me how I made it and it was just a generic sub.

Do a fruit, veggie, cheese, breads & cracker spread. Instead of having them laid out on trays across a flat table...find some large sturdy objects to randomly stack & throw some fabric over it. Then place all of your food around, but in an orderly way. I'm not sure if my explanation makes sense, but if you get what I'm trying to explain this will provide a beautiful spread for very simple inexpensive foods.
You could also grab a couple of spiral sliced hams...these can be served cold.
Good luck!

We are doing the exact same thing for our wedding in less than 5 weeks!! This is what we are having...... Antipasto platters, dolmades, olives etc Cheese platters with crackers bread sticks vol au vont shells filled with chicken and asparagus cheese sauce ( the shells can be bought and the sauce made a day ahead then just fill and heat) mini chicken drumsticks done in a plum sauce, and some in bbq sauce ( cooked on the bbq a day ahead then reheated in the microwave) a platter of cold cut meats, including cut up bbq chicken tiny spicy meatballs on toothpicks with a chilli dipping sauce fetta and spinach triangles little pitta bread pinwheels (not sure what they are called, use a flat bread, fill with cream cheese, ham and whatever topping you prefer then roll up and sice into bite size pieces) Mini quiches two platters of sushi rolls bruchetta I think that is everything. We are also serving dessert. wedding cake, 2 pavlovas, brandy snaps and 2 cheesecakes, huge bucket of strawberries and a chocolate fountain. I hope I have enough to please everyone, it is giving me nightmares. I really wanted to do this and I have lots of help but you still worry about running out of food etc etc. What do you think? Hope I have added to your ideas somewhat. Good luck with your planning. It is fun, even tho it is stressfull.

One big tip is that nothing should be messy!
The standard fruit, cheese, crackers, & veggie trays are perfect. An assortment of dips can be displayed. Shrimp cocktail w/lemon wedges & cocktail sauce is also nice and can be placed over a bed of crushed ice.
I would also look at the on-line menus of local reception/catering facilities in your area. Get an idea of what they serve during their cocktail hour. Or better yet, go and visit a few catering halls as a 'potential customer'. Although you are NOT going to use their facility, you can get menu ideas as if you were considering their hall.
Good luck!

My reception was the same. I had a platter of fruit, strawberries pineapple, apples, and a friend let me borrow one of those chocolate fondue fountains? They're not expensive from walmart if you need one...like 20 bucks. We had toothpicks and people dipped the fruit in the fountain. We had just small finger foods like garlic knots and sausage balls. We did have a large variety though because we had a few women in our church bring a dish. Don't feel bad to ask people to help! And be sure to write thank you cards if they do!!

We had a small low budget wedding and provided:
-Chicken salad cresoints- chicken salad from a local catering company was $10 a bucket and cresoints from sams club also cheap
-Cocktail weeners in barbaque sauce-quick cheap and can sit in a crock pot all day with little or no attention
-A cheese/meat/cracker tray from Walmart (think it ran us about $20)
-Several varieties of bread with a spinich dip in a bread bowl- bought different kinds of bread from a bakery and bought the breadbowl with dip included at a grocery store
-Meatballs-also another great crock pot creation requiring little or no attention.
Just a few ideas hope hey help

Hi and congratulations!
Sounds fun!
Well, I can't think of anything offhand, but look up recipes online.
Here is what I would serve:
~ Finger Sandwiches
~ Assorted cheeses and crackers
~ Veggie tray with dip
~ Fruit tray with dip
~ A few more little "finger foods" if you want like tortilla roll ups (recipe below)
~ Cake, coffee, cold beverages (iced tea? lemonade? punch?)

We did all finger foods at mine, its actually a lot easier and better than a full course meal.
For cold foods we had shrimp and some dip for it. a bunch of fruit and chocolate fountain to dip strawberries in and pretzels as well. We also had crackers and some weird dip, not sure what its called but its the best stuff in the world. We also had the big cheese balls for the crackers.
For the hotter stuff we had miniature quiche (you can buy those at the grocery store), sausage balls, and I forget what else on that....
