How many deaths does it take in "Gun Free Zones" for us to come to our senses?

Declaring an area "Gun Free" is obviously working so well. It makes sure you have lots of unarmed victims when some lunatic with a gun decides it's time to go off his meds and on a spree!

How long until we drop this ludicrous platitude and actually do something sane - like allow people the means to defend themselves when gathered in groups?

Update:

Kristin: What a non-sequiter. That fact that ANYONE gets shot in a "gun free zone" proves that they are worthless.

Update 2:

Gun Free Zone Deaths:

Columbine - 14 dead, 23 wounded

Trolley Square Mall (SLC, UT) 6 dead, 4 wounded

Virginia Tech - 33 dead, 15 wounded

Tinley Park, Illinois - 5 dead

Kirkwood City Council - 6 dead, 2 wounded

Gun Free Zones hard at work increasing body counts wherever they are implemented!

Update 3:

DannyK - so you prefer that those intent on killing just be able to shoot the unarmed masses like FISH IN A BARREL?

    Imagine this scenario:

A disgruntled college student opens fire in a lecture hall and kills several people before anyone knows what's happening. One of his classmates is carrying a concealed weapon and reacts mere seconds later by drawing their weapon and taking aim at the shooter. Amidst the confusion another concealed weapons carrier comes out from behind cover in their own heroic attempt to end the carnage, and blows away the first student, mistaking him for the shooter. Other students have drawn their weapons as well now, and being more scared than they have ever been in their life, and untrained with a weapon, they fire several rounds at the shooter, which sail into and past him, injuring and killing several other students attempting to hide and escape.

So, I do agree with you to a point. I just think the people who have guns on campus should be hand selected, psychologically screened and trained to respond with accuracy.

Please don't mistake me for a liberal. I served this country and I know my way around a weapon. Don't forget to add the Nebraska Mall to your list.

A gun doesn't actually protect you from being shot. Especially when the shooter is an a psychotic irrational state planning to shoot themselves anyways. How many times to people NOT get shot in a gun free zone. More often than they do I would imagin.

EDIT: In Canada we don't exactly have "gun free zones." We can't really carry guns anywhere, yet when someone wants to kill a bunch of people it still tends to be in a school or crowded area. Granted it happens much less, but how would students be protected if they were allowed to carry guns?

The killer already knows he's going to kill himself and probably isn't thinking rationally anyways. Most likely he wants to return to the scene where is anger build up which is often at school. By the time the killer starts shooting, people will be dead before anyone with a gun has a chance to shoot him. Also, unless a person if very skilled and experienced with guns, chances are the person trying to stop the killer will hit a few innocent bystanders in the process.

What's worse, if all schools were "gun friendly zones" what would happen if you THOUGHT someone had a gun, but you were mistaken?

Allowing private citizens to conceal carry a weapon is a good idea to prevent situations like NIU from happening. Why is it you think that all these shootings are occurring in gun-free zones?

By putting out more gun-control laws all you are doing is ensuring that when someone DOES decide to go on a shooting spree like this, there will be NO ONE to stop him. Law-abiding citizens with concealed-carry permits are not the ones engaging in these horrific acts.

Be thankful this gunmen decided to kill himself before any more students could be harmed. He had already shot himself before law enforcement even arrived on scene, how much more damage could this guy have done had he not taken his own life?

Allowing concealed-carry has already proven to lower violent crime in almost every instance across the country. Currently only Wisconsin, Illinois, and Washington DC do not allow any form of concealed carry.

As a former cop and CHL instructor, there are some people who have NO business carrying a sidearm. Much less a bunch of brainless students.
