Truck Troubles?
91 Dodge Dakota 318 Magnum V8 automatic, 4X4 167,000 miles. Why is the overdrive jumping in and out, in and out at 45 mph and up. Not as noticeable when I get on the gas but when I let up and coast it kicks in. With the overdrive off it drives fine? Also truck has a fluctuating idle. Not sure if it is related. Any help would be appreciated. Truck is on the Sale block unless we can figure it out.

Look at a manual and see if it has an o.d. solenoid on the trans. Thats what was changed on my '97 to correct a similar problem. Search the forums at http://www.dodgetalk.com/forums. You may find the answer there, I've had a lot of help from the guys there.

Hard to say for sure if this would cause the overdrive symptoms, but.... Did you change the throttle position sensor yourself, and if so, did you adjust it? On most vehicles, they need to be set very precisely by measuring the output voltage with a high-impedance digital voltmeter at Idle and WOT. Definitely a suspect on the fluctuating idle.

Your electronic overdrive is kicking in the lock up on the torque converter. might need a new sensor. With that many miles I would check the O2 sensors and the Cadillac converter it maybe plugged.
