What tire sizes will fit on the standard steel wheels of a 2006 Scion Xa?

I have a 2006 Xa, and the stock size (185/60/15) is surprisingly expensive to replace. I have never changed tire sizes on my cars in the past, but I think it is justified in this case. What sizes will fit the standard steel wheels and not rub the fender wells?

I'd think a 185/70 would fit and be cheaper if they make them in 15".

They are expensive due to being ZR rated and built for Xa suspension. They do not last long, are expensive but without performance soft tires you will lose great ride, get road noise, cornering will be decreased and will not ride like a Toyota is supposed to.

I think you should stay with the OE tire size and expand your search:

General Altimax, Pirelli P4 Four Season and Toyo Spectrum all are quality products at a fair price.
