Do I have to return my broke printer because Canon freely sent a replacement since I was still under warranty?

So my printer broke and I called Canon. The customer service guy walked me through all kinds of steps, but it appeared the printer was unfixable. He said they would send a free replacement, which would include shipping supplies to return my broken one. The replacement wasn't brand new, but factory refurbished. The day I received the refurbished one, I miraculously fixed my own printer.

So, ethics aside, what will happen if I don't return either printer? I realize this is highly "wrong", but is there any way I can keep the one they sent and have two fancy printers? They have very little information about me. Would they forget the whole thing, or somehow be able to send the situation to a collection agency?

You will need to return one of the printers. Whether it be your old one or the replacement they sent you, you need to return one.

Canon will charge you an exorbitant price plus the cost of shipping the replacement printer out if they do not get a printer back.

Your old printer is not the property of canon. You agreed to these terms when you accepted the replacement.

They would probably contact your police department and have you charged with theft by deception. Canon is not a small little obscure printer company. They are a multinational megacorporation with a legal department the size of North Dakota.

The printer is not yours. If you keep it, you are stealing it.

When you get caught, you'll be arrested, fingerprinted, put in jail, have to go to court, be convicted, be fined and have to serve time in jail, have your name in the paper as a thief, and get to feel really good about yourself.

But hey - you do what you think is the right thing.

My ex girlfriend works for sony as a collection specialist. I asked her and she said it would be rare that the police would be involved unless the product was of substantial value. the value is different for every company. she wouldnt tell me what theres was but she did say for a cheap printer they would most likely mess with your credit rating. So if you dont plan on buying a car or renting an apartment or finding a new job then trashy credit should not be a worry for you. I was recently denied a condo rental with a credit score of 690. Which is pretty good but wasn't good enough

They have your shipping address, so obviously they have enough data to know who has the printer. And they do scan the return labels, so they have tracking numbers. Eventually their computers will notice that you haven't shipped it back.

I would seriously doubt that they'd forget about it. I would contact cannon and ask which one to send back. If you want to keep it, they may be willing to sell it to you, but it's extreamly unlikely they'll just let you keep it.

I had the same problem with a hp printer, they sent me new one but i didn't have to send the old one back. i'd keep it, they just want it back to refurbish and resell it, but no they won't come after you.

Just contact Canon and tell them what happened, they will tell you what to do, hope this helps and good luck.
