Catman is well meaning but the instructions he gives might as well be for the Space Shuttle.

ON MY 2001 FORD TAURUS (4 DR.) IT IS NOT LOCATED IN THE FUEL TANK ITS LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR UNDERNEATH THE REAR PASSENGER DOOR IT LOOKS LIKE A SMALL CANISTER WITH ONE HOSE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR AND TWO HOSES COMING OUT THE BACK OF THE CANISTER TO REAR OF THE CAR.(I JUST CHANGED MINE TODAY)

Buy the new filter and simply put it in the same way as the old one. Its held on by a couple of clamps that you squeeze with a pair of pliers probably. Remove the gas cap. Put a pan under the filter. Gas will come out. Don't smoke while doing this. (you didn't need to be told that did you) You might have to crank the car for a little while before it starts. Yes! sometimes these filters clog up and your car won't go over 25mph without sputtering. You might have to raise the car a little to get under it. A cheap Hydraulic from Walmart works good for this.

Usually just in front of the rear suspension, probably passenger side. Ford uses some pretty strange methods of fastening their fuel filters. You might want to check these pages to familiarize yourself with the required procedure for your car, and depending on which one it is, you may need a special tool.

it's near the frame on the passenger side, just below the passenger door
