Am I supposed to get holiday pay for working on President's Day?

I work at a company and get paid by the hour (40 hrs/week). However, my company doesn't give us public holidays off so I still had to come to work today on President's Day. Does the law require them to pay me the holiday rate, i.e. at least1.5 x more? I am in California.

No, the law does not require your employer to pay you at a holiday rate.

    See:

    http://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/FAQ_Holidays.htm

    (Particularly Question #1)

California law does not require that an employer provide its employees with paid holidays, that it close its business on any holiday, or that employees be given the day off for any particular holiday. If an employer closes its business on holidays and gives its employees time off from work with pay, such a circumstance exists pursuant to a policy or practice adopted by the employer, pursuant to the terms of a collective bargaining agreement, or pursuant to the terms of an employment agreement between the employer and employee, as there is nothing in the law that requires such a practice. Additionally, there is nothing in the law that mandates an employer pay an employee a special premium for work performed on a holiday, Saturday, or Sunday, other than the overtime premium required for work performed in excess of eight hours in a workday or 40 hours in a workweek.

FYI - President's Day is a federal holiday.

We do nothing on Labor Day, because it's a day free of labor :) And, the white rule is because Labor Day is the official "end of summer", and white is a very summery color. But I still wear white after Labor Day.

Depends on the company you work for, im at work right now and i get paid holiday pay for today, but i have friends that had to work today also (at different jobs) & they dont get paid holiday pay. So it depends on the company you work for, you should ask them.

No. Holidays are not mandated by law but are a gift certain employers provide. Your company doesn't pay holiday pay, so you are not entitled to it.

No, holiday pay isn't mandated by law. It's a matter of company policy.

Look at your contract. That usually will say. Some holidays don't count. If you are Gov worker, then yes, that one would because most gov offices are closed. But if its bestbuy or a retail store, i doubt it. If its an office, doubt it also. But check your contract.

I don't know if that's state specific.. but you should inquire with your HR dept. I don't think it's required for non-public holidays. If they cannot give you a good answer I would ask them who you can call, but that's probably not going to be easy to find out the "right" answer. You will probably get a lot of different guesses. Or call the State of CA and see if they can direct you.

No that is a holiday that is for basically government employees not the real working class. Write your Senator about it
