Grinding noise from front of Suberban?

I hope somone can help me here... I'm 5 months pregnant and my husband is in Iraq and normally deals with all the car stuff... Well, for the past week or so every once in a while I would here a light grinding noise from the front of my car when the steering wheel went to the left... Then, last night when i was backing out of the driveway i turned the wheel left to get on the street and i heard a crack/pop noise.. and the grinding was going on the whole way to where i was going and the whole way back.. This morning i had and appt and just as i pulled into the parking lot i heard a loud crack and now it sounds like something is rubbing against my tire from the inside.. not sure but it almost sounds like the passenger side tire.. i called the shop here at Ft. Campbell and they can't look at it till atleast tomorrow as long as i drop it off today.. But, I'm not sure if it's safe to drive there.. anyone have any opinions or suggestions? thanks so much

Update:

Thanks for all the input.. I had it towed to the shop on base and it ended up being the tire hub (wheel bearing).. with the tow it only cost $318.... thanks for all the answers.. except the loser that said to not call my husband about it and to make friends.. well loser, after 8 years here, i have friends here and i only talk to my husband every once in a while when he can call.. I've been an Army wife alot longer than you've been in the Army.. so, private, I out rank you and u need to learn to speak to military wives.. untill u've lived outside the barracks mind your business.. I was asking about a car.. not ur opinion on what i need to tell my husband.

if this truck is two wheel drive then the noise coming from your front end is more than likely a wheel bearing gone bad in which case you should not drive it because the wheel bearing may come apart and the wheel will fall off...if ti is a four wheel drive then the other answerers are correct in telling you it is a cv joint broken.....either way you risk damaging your vehicle even further and more importantly yourself and your baby.....in a suburban when your cv joints bust there is generally a reason as these are rather heavy duty joints....make sur the shop you take it to finds the cause of the problem as well....ps dont endanger yourself or your baby ....HAVE IT TOWED

The front of the vehicle needs to be repaired -- sounds like CV joint axels of which there are two. I have a shop in my town that repairs only axels and can fix the car in about 2 hours. Look in the phone book or take it to the dealership. Go in the morning so it can be repaired by the afternoon. Or use a taxi. Military wives have to be independent and make friends so they can get help on the base by other military wives. There is more than one garage in your area-- use the dealership and do not worry your husband with phone calls that there is trouble at home. The car needs repair nothing that you can not do. Sounds like a bad CV joint in one of the axle shafts.

Or... it could be something related to the steering linkage but if you are hearing it while you drive, it's either in the moving parts of the drive-train or something in the brakes, like a stuck caliper or totally worn brake pads. These are all just typical wear and tear items. It's nothing you did wrong.

I feel bad for you. You women left behind should have support groups to help you. It's just not right.

If you were using the brakes at the time it sounds like the pads are metal to metal with the brake rotors. I would not dive this until it was checked out be a mechanic.

I would be safe and have it towed. Something let loose in the front end and you don't want to get in an accident if it gets real bad.
