High school graduation DATE on job application--isn't this same as asking for a person's age? Is it legal?

I am filling out an application for a government job with a major city on the East coast. The application is on-line. I tried leaving the date of high school graduation blank, but could not, as this prevented me from continuing to the application's next page. I have not seen this on a job application ever, or at least within memory. Putting this down is an open declaration of one's age, and I thought it was illegal for employers to ask an applicant's age. Is the high school graduation date a way to discern an applicant's age or should I shrug my shoulders, fill it out, and convince myself that as this is for a government job, their background inquiries are deep and they will want to fact-check aspects of my biography, schooling being a major part?. It is just that as I am not in the first bloom of youth, I am afraid that my high school graduation date will automatically disqualify me from being considered. Any thoughts? Anybody else encountered this and found it gave them pause

It is legal, and it is not a declaration of your age. Some people graduate high school early, others drop out of school and get a

ged later in life. The government does not discriminate based on age. So, take a deep breath, fill out that form, and if you get an interview, hold your head high. Any interviewer will see that you no longer have the "bloom of youth". Be confident that your life experience is a bonus for the employer- you are mature and know how to deal with people and pressure. Right?

Whereas the HS grad date is to a certain extent a time marker for everyone, it is usually found on simple resumes anyway. It should not be a problem with a government job as claims of discrimination are vigorously avoided. Just fill it out. To a certain extent, one advertises age the minute the interview starts just by showing up and looking the way you do. LOL!

It does make me think, but as far as I know, they (anyone connected with the government) have every right to search into your background including your age, gender, schools, if you've ever been in trouble, etc.

I doubt that your age will prevent them from taking you as a serious applicant. In fact, it might help them to know that you are not just out of high school! Good luck - hope you get the job!!

Submitting the date of High School graduation is, in fact, NOT a declaration of age. There are plenty of people who drop out of high school, only to later in life continue where they left off, graduating a t a later date then they would have originally. most companies will assume that you went straight through school, but it is never a solid guarantee of a person's age.

Yes this is perfectly legal. They can ask a persons age but the can not base the reason for hiring or not hiring you on your age, or race, etc.

You gave them you S.S. number so what is the problem? If you want the job, answer the questions. You are how ever old you are.
