I had my dog spayed 13 hours ago and now she is vomiting green slime.....?
She is 2 1/2 years old. I took her in, and they started right about 13 hours ago. There were some complications. Turned out she was pregnant and we didn't know until they already had her opened up. They removed the puppies, which were about 6 weeks gestational, and the size of Kiwi's.
The vet did put her on an IV, but as far as I know, it was just to give her fluids. He said it was a bit rough for her, but she came out of it okay.
About an hour ago - 12 hours after the procedure, she started vomiting. The first time it was a LOT! She vomited 5 times in only 2 minutes. Each time was less, but every time was green. The last time was slimier then the others, and had some white slime mixed in with it.
She ate nothing today or yesterday per vets rules. I've only given her a few teaspoons of water & an ice cube since we've been home.
I'm concerned. Is this normal & possibly due to anesthesia? Or could it be something serious?

How long has this dog been npo? 48 hours? did they do a hydration bolus or anything?
A spay/ abort is riskier than a regular spaying. The green stuff is bile. You need to continue to keep trying to hydrate her, but do not force the issue if she refuses. It will just make her vomit more! I want you to do the scruff test. Pick up her scruff (just lift it, do not pinch) and see how long it takes to get back down to normal. Go here for a full explanation:

if you think your dog is dehydrated, then please call the vet now. It is life threatening. Honestly, I have a quick dialing finger and call before 11 pm just to get re-assurance. It costs nothing and it is a lot better than calling at 2 a.m., lol!
Anyway, do the dehydration test and see how she is doing. She may need some meds to calm her tum down as I am sure this is a rxn to the surgery. Without looking at your pup, I would not venture any other info! Good luck, and please go to the website! Blessings!

Vomiting is not unusual after surgery because of the fact that anesthesia can cause nausea, especially on an empty stomach. But if there was a concern during surgery, she might have done better if she was continued on iv fluids overnight, at your vet or an e-clinic. Did they mention that she vomited while in the hospital?
Green can be a concern, because it can be small intestinal bile and is not usually found in vomit unless there is an obstruction, but I have seen it in dogs with very delayed emptying of the stomach.
If she is vomiting that much, you may want to have her checked tonight. If for no other reason than that it can't feel good to vomit when you just had abdominal surgery! Please get her some relief, and yourself some peace of mind, go to an emergency clinic and make sure that all is ok.
Do not give her ANYTHING orally for at least a few more hours, because at this point, all it will do is cause more vomiting. If she continues, dehydration is a concern, and she needs to be given fluids, either iv or under her skin.
And KIKI, the vet didn't know the dog was pregnant, but neither did the owners who are with it all the time! So if you are going to call names...

Well, the green slime is bile or whatever is in her stomach mixed with mucus. Anesthea does make animals nauseas and it is normal for them to throw up sometimes after surgery, however, if it is repeativly like you have described, she needs medical attention. Dogs will become dehydrated fast and the more dehydrated she becomes the more she will continue to vomit. Dehydration is very painful for dogs. Try to keep her hydrated. I don't know if you can give pedialite to dogs or not but you should get her to a vet before she develops sever complications due to dehydration. The vet can also prescribe medicine that will relieve the nauseousness. Also she more than likely needs an IV from the vomiting. One last thing is all the straining of vomiting could rip out her stitches so it's best to get her to the vet.

I think it is pretty normal for dog's to vomit after being spayed, but I only think that because I remember reading it online somewhere. My dog was only 8 weeks old when she was spayed and it happened before I brought her home, so I have no experience of my own to back this up. Search the web for side effects of spaying and see what you find. You may also want to call a 24 hour vet clinic and see what they say.

The day my pup got spayed, she too vomited what looked to be "green slime".
She was very out of it for a while afterwards, and SOME vomiting and lethargy is normal immediately after spaying.
Call your Vet if you're concerned.

It is normal for dogs to get sick within the first couple of days after getting spayed.. Keep an eye on her.. If she doesnt seem like she's getting better in the next day or so, call your vet to find out what's going on.. Only feed her small portions of food and water a few hours at a time to see if she holds it down.. Sometimes its a good idea not to give them food or water the first night after being spayed.. But it is up to you if you want to see if she can hold a little down.. But only give her a little bit.. If you are concerned, you can call your vet.. You can never be too cautious.. I hope she gets better..

It is probably just the anesthesia, many animals, like humans get quite sick after surgery (I have vomited up my fair share of 'green slime' after surgery!). I would make sure that her demeanor is good, she's bright and alert, not overly painful. Tomorrow when you feed her, make note of her appetite and make sure that there is one, also make note of her bathroom habits. If by tomorrow, she's still vomiting, if she's depressed, little or no appetite, I would be going back to your vet for a surgery recheck (there should be no charge for this).
Hope this helps.

After a surgery, dogs can be sick but vomitting "green slime" doesn't sound good at all. Go back to the vet and tell them and they will help your poor dog. Hope she gets better.

Think it is normal, call the vet to make sure it is normal. I had my puppy spayed before she reached 1 year old and they kept it overnight to make sure she was all right. Could be the medication that they gave her. She was not outside eating grass was she? Dogs have that habit of eating grass to help make them vomit. Don't give ice cubes, they are not good for dogs!!!
