Argument that can never be resolved?

I believe that Dale Sr. could have gotten an eighth cup....strongly believe this...think about it...competition has only gotten stronger but he was showing signs of coming out of a slump...even in his last 500 he had the car to beat..but he chose to give the win to what he believed to be a better cause....not to mention the COT is a car that is close to what he began driving....obviously this is a question/argument that could never be resolved but what do you think....please answer without the basis of your favorite driver...(meaning, "no jeff gordon is the best")...thats not what i am asking...thanks in advance for genuine responses....

Update:

ok suzette shut up...its called remembering a fallen hero...and the debate if sr could drive a cot is also a question that cant be resolved...drivers who drove the older car know that theyre major similarities....and yes i still see people try to justify their answer by saying how "great" gordon is...his average finish in 01 was 11th with 6 wins...who knows if he would have had that with sr...who cares....that wasnt the question...and as far as the retiring...who knows...dave marcus was like 70 before he got out a car...but he sucked....thanks for the answers

There is no doubt, no mater if you loved him or hated him. He was one of the very best drivers and respected in NASCAR . I truely believed he could of won that 8th Championship, but I also keep in mind he was also focused on building DEI for his kids. He put his drivers of DEI before himself. As he did and unknowing gave his life to block the pack to see Waltrip and Junior catpure the victor that day.

He was more than a icon. He had a way of getting things done and I believe he would of been giving Hendrick's a run for there money with the RCR #3 and his DEI teams if he was still with us today.

Yes he would have 8 or 9 by now.

Apparently no one remembers he came in second in 2000. He had finally recovered from the injuries that had bothered him for so long.

Dale would have won the 500 in 2001 too. He was setting things up for the win like he always did. Anyone who knew Dale sr knows he never let anyone win anything.

I disagree I dont think he would have gotten his 8th--Sr had like 3 wins in 1998-1 win in 1999 and 0 wins in 2000--He was in the twilight years of his career and was winding down--The win totals per year were winding down-He was getting Older. The fact he was capable of winning the 2001 Daytona 500 doesnt mean he was going to win the 2001 Championship--The Overall quality of Young drivers coming up and the Competetion he would have had to face also would have been a factor of keeping him from winning his 8th and 9th Championships --Plus the Chase FORMAT--He was a Truely Great Driver I must add !!!!!!

Dale would have retired by now anyway so the COT stuff doesn't matter, the guy would be 55 or 56 years old. He had maybe one chance at another title, but the way Gordon ran in 2001 Dale wasn't going to beat him. I honestly think he would not have gottten another championship. Probably a couple more race wins, but not another championship.

I do believe he could have gotten one more cup title before retirement. He was an amazing driver and could do things with a car that amazed me. I think thats why I am a Tony Stewart fan. Tony drives the same way that Dale did. Sadly, we will never know, but he did go out doing exactly what he loved to do. Turn 4 at Daytona should be painted black in his memory as one of the greats and hows this? I think nascar should retire numbers to a select few, and #3 should be the first one retired.

If Earnhardt was still here, I do belive that he'd have 9 titles and would've retired in 2004, so to answer your question, yeah, I believe that Dale could've won an eighth tile, probably in 2001 if Dale survived that fatal crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500.

    RIP Dale

I don't think Earnhardt Sr would have won his 8th championship & since Gordon joined the NASCAR circuit, he won more races than Sr from time of Gordon's first full year til the untimely death of Sr (peace be with Sr) & I don't think he was going to drive many years. Gordon & Sr may not have been best friends but Sr saw something special in Gordon

#3 Dale Sr was my all time favorite guy to root for. I loved to see him win, but I enjoyed hearing *here comes Earnhardt* even if he did not win.

I think he would have won #8, and I think that would have been the end for him. Not that he would have done badly, I think he would have stepped down, dropped his safety net for the last time and set his sights on being a competitive owner and race team co ordinator.

    He is missed, and remembered.

Dale probably would have been retired by now, so it's doubtful he would have driven the COT. The last few years, the competition's been pretty close. If luck was on his side as far as engine failures and avoiding wrecks, it is possible he might have gotten #8, but we'll never know.

No one will ever know if he could have won another championship. Was he at the top of his game or on his way down? I think NASCAR would be a completely different animal if Sr. was still around.

I loved Senior... and Jeff Gordon both as drivers i thought they were both amazing but i still believe the same thing the senior could have had a couple more cups and a lot more wins... he showed no signs of retiring and he loved to race... he probably would still be racing today
