How can someone not truly be in love with someone who doesn't love them back? Details below.?

Question

I've heard people say that you can't truly be in love with someone if they aren't in love with you back.  Can someone explain that to me?  I know how I feel about a certain someone and it doesn't change my feelings for him just because they're not reciprocated.  I'm 28 so this isn't "puppy love" or some teenage crush.  Anyway, he and I are really good friends now after dating, but I don't understand how someone can tell me that I'm not in love with him or can't be truly in love just because he doesn't feel the same for me.  Just wanted to get some observations.

that is inner strength, someone not wanting to admit that they have love for someone who doesn't return the love, of course you can love someone who doesn't love you back.

Well wouldn't true love be true love because both people feel the same way for each other and it is a true bond between two people who love each other so much that they would care for the other even over them self? 
I don't know maybe someone can explain it better than me. I'll check back and see if there's a better answer.
I do believe that you can be truly in love with him but its not true love because he doesn't feel the same about you...get it now?

I was still in love with my ex after he broke up with me and decided he wasn't in love with me anymore. It took a while to get over him and quit loving him. I would say that you weren't really in love if you didn't know this guy well, but it sounds like you know him well enough to be in love with him.
