Trying to back up my files onto a CD-R?

I keep getting the message that there is no disc in the drive as I'm trying to write files to a CD-R. THERE IS A BRAND NEW CD-R disc in the drive. What am I doing wrong? This is making me nuts.

Thanks in advance.

    I'm assuming your using windows.

-Windows has problems with optical drives for some reason. It could be your computer.

-Make sure the drive has the ability to write to CDs.

-There are some brands of CDs that windows doesn't like, like Imitation doesn't seem to work on windows. The brand that I use is Maxell.

-You might just want to back up your files to a hard drive.
