Calling all Americans!!...?

I live in UK and I have often heard/read of Americans eating Biscuits with gravy. An English Biscuit is a US Cookie so I am wondering what is a US Biscuit? I'm guessing its savory but what is it? What does it taste like and how do you make it/them?

Thanx

I'm from Texas, and biscuits and gravy are a breakfast favorite. Biscuits are basically a kind of bread in small, soft cakes that have been cut out and baked. Here my recipes....enjoy!

    ~Southern Biscuits~

    2 cups all purpose flour

    1 TBS baking powder

    3/4 tsp salt

    1/2 tsp. baking soda

    5 TBS chilled butter

1 cup milk, buttermilk can be used

    1 TBS sugar

    PreHeat oven to 425.

In large bowl sift flour, baking powder, salt, baking soda and sugar. Cut the butter into this mixture until it is coarse crumbs. Add milk, a little at a time and toss til you get a dough that sticks together. But not too sticky. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gather into a disk shape and knead lightly a few times just til smooth. Pat the dough to 3/4 inch thick and cut . Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.

    For the delicious gravy:

½ pound ground breakfast sausage or bacon, depending on your taste

    2 tablespoons butter

    4 tablespoons all purpose flour

    3 cups cold milk

    Salt and pepper to taste

Sauté the sausage or bacon until it is cooked and has released as much of its fat as possible. Remove it with a slotted spoon and do NOT drain the grease. You’ll need it to make the roux. (I said this was delicious, not health food). You should have about 2 tablespoons of rendered pork fat. Add the butter and melt it. Then add the flour a little at a time over medium heat, constantly whisking. Cook for about 2-3 minutes. Now start adding the cold milk a little at a time, whisking incessantly. Toward the end of the milk add the sausage or crumbled bacon back in. When you reach the desired consistency add salt and pepper to taste.

A biscuit is a roll type of bread, but it is more buttery and pure heaven. Biscuit and gravy is usually a breakfast thing, with the gravy being white and having little pieces of sausage in it. The best biscuits in my opinion, are from a fast food restaurant called "Popeyes." Best food. Fattest food. If you eat too many biscuits you will receive "biscuit poisoning." This is very bad because you gain excessive weight, becoming morbidly obese.

I looked all over for a link to a good picture of American sausage gravy and biscuits, but I couldn't find a real good one. The first link is the best I could find of the biscuits with the gravy on them. The second link shows both the British version and the American version of the biscuit. The third link is a typical recipe for sausage gravy. Hope this helps!

Hello, biscuits in the US are like scones. We have lots of different recipes for them like, garlic and cheddar biscuits, beer bisquits, and plain biscuits with jam or gravy. They are easy to make but alot of people just buy the kind in a can that bake up nice and easy (Pilsbury brand).

    Here's a recipe...

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    4 teaspoons baking powder

    2 tablespoons granulated sugar

    1 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup butter or margarine , cold

    3/4 cup milk , cold

    Directions

1Preheat oven to 425 F Mix first 4 ingredients together in a bowl.

2Cut in butter with a pastry blender or a fork, or two knives, until crumbly.

    3Add milk.

4Stir until it forms a ball.

5Add a bit more milk if necessary to make a soft dough.

6Roll or pat to 1 inch thick.

7Cut into circles with a biscuit cutter or a floured glass.

8Arrange on a greased baking sheet.

9Bake in 425 F for about 10- 12 minutes or until risen and nicely browned. (in my oven it usually takes 15 minutes).

I do feel what you are saying white people in american are considered the superior in this land and so if you are out of the box you are called a minority, but I say america do not rule the world or the mind of anyone so if you ever should see a form that ask what you are choose other, because that is just some crap to get your mind be inferior and you no you are no. Don't let them get to you or get you down. Stay on top. If you are black be balck and proud because you come from rich heritage and derived from kings and queens, don't let them fool you or down grade you with some stupid form made by some racist white people. Be Blessed

I'm from Australia - I'd describe an American biscuit as a larger, more buttery and salty scone - and eaten with a thick "gravy" that is often milky and gummy with bits of sausage in it.

Southern style biscuits are similar to a scone, but not sweet and lighter and airier. They go great with sausage gravy. You can get loads of recipes off the web.

In American English, a "biscuit" is a small form of bread made with baking powder or baking soda as a leavening agent rather than yeast. (Biscuits, soda breads, and corn bread, among others, are sometimes referred to collectively as "quick breads" to indicate that they do not need time to rise before baking.)

Biscuits are extremely soft and similar to scones. In the United States, there is a growing tendency to refer to sweet variations as "scone" and to the savory as a "biscuit", though there are exceptions for both (such as the cheese scone). A sweet biscuit served with a topping of fruit and juice is called shortcake. In Canada, both sweet and savoury are referred to as "biscuits", "baking powder biscuits" or "tea biscuits", although "scone" is also starting to be used.

Biscuits are a common feature of Southern U.S. cuisine and are often made with buttermilk. They are traditionally served as a side dish with a meal, especially in the morning. As a breakfast item they are often eaten with butter and a sweet condiment such as molasses, light sugarcane syrup, sorghum syrup, honey, or fruit jam or jelly. With other meals they are usually eaten with butter or gravy instead of sweet condiments. However, biscuits and gravy (biscuits covered in country gravy) are usually served for breakfast, sometimes as the main course.
