i have just been diagnosed with graves disease and was wondering what exactly does radio iodine therapy involve? is it safe while im pregnant?

It's absolutely CONTRAINDICATED when you are pregnant! And really even otherwise during child bearing period.

RAI is not an appropriate treatment for Grave's disease at all, pregnant or not. Your doctor will push it and push it, because it is easier for the doctor. But the doctor doesn't have to experience the negative consequences to your health for the rest of your life the way that you will.
Please do more research. Read about the consequences of RAI in general. Don't even worry about pregnancy for now. You need to worry about your health, for the rest of your life. That's much bigger than one pregnancy.
