'83 300SD $1,000 brake job???

Thinking of buying a very well kept '83 Mercedes 300SD. The only issue is that the orange brake light comes on. Took it to a local independent MB shop and the mechanic quoted me $1,000 to fix the brakes? Is this reasonable or am I getting ripped off? He said something about the calipers on one front side being bad and that he usually also changes the hoses??? Can a brake job really cost this much?

A front brake caliper is about $275, four sets of pads are about $150, sensors are about another $75, so that's $500 in parts before the hoses. Figure 3-4 hours of labor at $75 in another $300. Gets you to $800 before the hoses (and assuming you don't need any rotors ($50 each). Doesn't sound like $1,000 is very far off.

rebuilt calipers can be obtained for a large saving.i recommend pressure bleeding on these older cars as pumping a full stroke can ruin a master cylinder [brake mud accumulates at the end of cilinder bore] wheel bearings should be repacked at this time and rotors turned/replaced as needed, the pad sensors will also have to be replaced if they contacted the rotors, brake hoses on this old of a car would be a wise investment . so yes if a complete brake 4 wheel brake job is planned it could very well cost 1000 dollars or so.

Yes, at the dealer. If you can find a good mechanic, you may be able to find the same part (caliper) used or you can rebuild it (the piston seals are probably what are bad), you can save some big money. Changing the hoses is probably a precautionary measure, given the age of the car. I would replace them.

Yes this is very normal for an older luxury car-- be prepared to spend all kinds of money for routine maintenance-- check on how much tune-ups are & oil changes 1st before you get into something that'll cost you as more to maintain than you are really wanting to put out.

on any other car brakes 30.00 3inch hose 2.50 caliper 100.00

labor 65.00 and i am being generous on the prices.it takes longer to jack up the car and take off the wheel then it does to change out those three parts

if its just the brake pads for your WDB126 its too much, if the lights lit up then the brake pads has reached its limit, need to change for safety.

just the fact that its at a dealer makes me think its rip off. sounds like it. but on some older models, they have to order certain parts.

    be cautious
