There is no way you can dilate backwards...your body only starts to dilate when it's getting ready to give birth. It's not like your body can change it's mind. Once you start you are having that baby. And if you reached 9 cm labor would be extremely intense and the baby would be just about coming out! I think your friend is VERY CONFUSED.

First off if she was at 9 cms she would be having the baby. 10 cms is fully dilated and time to push. And you can't go back wards unless a doctor checked her wrong but no doctor in their right mind would send anyone home with a 6cm yet a 9cm. I think your friend needs to get her facts a little straight or she is just fibbin! Good luck to her!

NO WAY! 10 cm is the most someone can dilate because then that means the babies head is right there ready to come out. If she got checked and the doctor told her she was 9 cm they would have sent her straight to the hospital no questions asked.
I tried to search on the internet for some links talking about dilating but came up short. Sorry.

I would have to say no you can not go backwards, however one person could say you are dilated to one thing while another tells you something different it all depends on your big the persons fingers are that is checking for dilation. Also if she were really dilated to a 9 she would be almost ready to push since full dilation is 10. Hope that helps!

Yeah course you can. I dilated to 7cm, then my contractions calmed down and went back to 4cms dilated. It all depends on how the labour is progressing. There is more chance of the baby getting more distressed

Yes, but you don't dilate to 9 without being in labor, unless she has an incompitant cervix in which case she'd be on bedrest, probably in the hospital.
You can close back up in labor, say if you suddenly feel you aren't safe, someone you hate comes in the room, something dangerous happens, etc.

I have never heard of decreasing in cms maybe after the baby was born but not during labor.. Labor does slow down after getting an epidural but it doesnt make u go down in cms

it is possible to be really soft and for them to hold it open and you not be in labor and not dilating but it would not stay open on its own so there for you would not be considered dilated but very soft. i had my doctor tell me that with one of my kids
