Why do dogs do this??
Before laying/settling down, a dog will spin around a few times and scratch at the blanket/sleeping surface. Why do they do this?? My dog does this all the time and I was just wondering why...
THANK YOU!! :]

Circling is common behavior in dogs. No one knows why, but the theory is that they "make a bed" by knocking down tall grass, padding down snow or shuffling stones off the dirt before curling up for a nap. It may be for any of these reasons, but pet dogs will circle anywhere indoors, even in their own beds. It's not reasoned behavior, but is instinctive to all canines, domesticated and wild.

Instinct.
Wolves or other wild dogs do this to pat down the grass for them to sleep on.
It's like when people fluff their pillows - to make it comfortable.

I actually looked this up a while ago. It's particially do to intinct like 2-3 turns. When spinning/nesting is ecessive its due to small living quarters most likely when they were small.

I know my Dog does it to get her blanket in the position she wants it in, she makes it as comfortable for herself as she can. I dont know why others do it but thats what she does.

I think they almost all do that. It is a left over instinct from when they were wild animals. They would turn around to flatten the grass and make them selves comfortable.
Also they are checking around to see nothing can sneak up behind them.

My dogs do that to! I believe they do it to get comfortable, or to put their scent all over the place where they are settling down.
