"Threats" of violence on 2/29?

Parents in our school districts received letters saying that grafitti has been found in or near some of the high schools & neighborhoods that is being perceived as a threat related to Leap Day-2/29. Schools will remain open that day, but the high schools will have increased security & the elementary schools will have increased police patrols. Parents do have the option of keeping their kids home that day and the absence would be excused. My question is - If your school sent home such a notice, would you send your kids to school that day - why or why not?

If the option is given to keep the kids home with an excused absence, I would keep mine home.

Chances are the threat is just a hoax, but why take that chance?

Even if the absence was not excused, why take the chance?

With that going on, neither the students nor the teachers will be able to focus at school on that day. I can see the building being evacuated at least once during the day and all the kids just standing around out in the parking lot or ball field or where ever.

I'd keep my child home - if the police are getting involved, it means that it's something that's being taken seriously, and I'd rather my child miss one day of school than take part in something like a shooting. That's something that you can never erase from their mind - it'll follow them always.

As a parent it's my job to protect my child from credible threats - and if the school district and police are saying that you're allowed to keep your child home that day, I'd say it's pretty credible.

    JMHO :-)

If somebody was going to do violence, they wouldn't announce the day they were doing it.

If they wanted a lot of people to get hurt, they'd probably announce one day and do it another.
