Is baseball really a "team sport"?

I mean really, at any given time there are 3 people doing stuff, and 7 guys standing around thinking to themselves "I really hope he hits it to me this time..."

Then if a guy gets a hit, there are still only 3 people doing anything. The guy getting and throwing the ball, the runner running, and MAYBE you could count the guy going to catch it as doing something though he's still just standing there too.

Don't know how you can stand it really.

Sounds like you casted your vote without waiting for the response.

Watching baseball on tv stinks. I love the game, but tv does a HORRIBLE job showing what is really happening. The announcers are just as bad about getting themonitors to move to important areas that would be very good to seee.

Every pitch, every players moves. For example: on a 0-0 count the players will play stright up, unless there is a shift already. Then on 1-0, the players shift to the strong side of the batter (protect the lines).

2-0 more shift the same way.

2-1 one shift back towards stright up- you get the idea.

Once a ball is hit, every player moves to their assigned area. You ever see someone make an error in the MLB? Notice how someone else is basically right behind them, give or take some distance? That's not an accident.

Every time someone with speed gets on base there is communication between the fileders, pitcher, and cathcer, that involves or comes from the bench.

I recommend watching the college world series this year. You will pick up a lot more and see how the game is played with passion.

Sorry you don' t like baseball. Most people enjoy the CWS though anyway.

Of course it is. Have you ever tried playing baseball while filling all nine positions? Its not easy. If the ball is hit to any infielders on the ground they have to throw it to first base. If there isn't a first baseman then the runner will continue to advance, and when the pitcher pitches the catcher catches the ball. If there wasn't a catcher then base-runners would be stealing bases left and right. And finally when a runner is trying to tag up then the outfielder usually hits a cut-off man. And when a runner hit the ball every person on the field is doing something, the other outfielders are backing the play up, the First, second and third basemen are all doing something and the catcher and pitcher are backing up the plate (the only person that sits there is the DH) And it is perfectly easy to be able to stand baseball. You just have to find something that you really enjoy about it.

Yes it is. when you are on defense any time the ball is put into play 9 TEAM members are doing something. They are going to move into a position depending on where the ball is hit. you may have to make a cut off or back up another player. On offense although only one guy at any given time will be "at bat" but what about the runner on first or second and or third. these guys are getting ready to advance. so yes it takes a team to win or lose. if you are on base how do you advance (except a steal) to the next base, or score, By your TEAM MATE. with your thinking,in football wwhen the defense is on the side lines are they still part of the team?

Obviously you haven't watch baseball, really watch. If a pitcher is very good but the catcher isn't, the pitching sucks. If the pitcher and the catcher are very good but the batter hits the ball and any of the players who is in its way is a bad fielder, the team sucks. Every one of the players must do his part when his time to play comes. Otherwise the whole team loses. And when batting, each batter must do as the manager or coach tells him to do as the game requires strategy with a man, the manager, directing it. You may get away more easily playing badly in a soccer team than in a baseball's. Now, for those for whom baseball is alien, may find it boring. I'd rather watch a slow game of baseball, which need not be boring because of the times needed, than a slow game of other sport that by definition should be fast.

Yeah it is. And everyone in the field is doing something whenever the ball is hit you just don't see it because the camera is focused on the ball. NASCAR claims to be a team sport (back to the person commenting somewhere above me), they also claim to be a sport. Race car driving isn't a team "sport", there are drivers on the same team but they never do anything together. And you could say that the pit-crew is the team but isn't it just a really fast mechanics shop?

yes when A rod won the MVP with texas, his team had a terrible record. Without a team with a supporting cast, you can't do anything, as proved by A-Rod in texas. When your on the field you have to count on your teammates to back you up if you miss the ball and on base you need to rely on teammates to drive you in. If they walk you you need the guy behind you to do some damage to make them pay. Baseball is a team sport

In some aspects it is but in others it isn't.

It is in the fact that a player is always dependant on his teammates. As a pitcher, i know that having a good defense behind u is very reassuring and can change a game.

I also know that it can be a two person game, especially if u have a dominant pitcher on the mound.

You don't know the game. 10 players are in every play and every pitch is different. Yes, then a single player can also stand out. It's the beauty of the game that you can't win without being a team and the team with the best individuals wins. Can't see why you'd like a freak game like American football.

If you think its just 3 guys doing stuff while 7 others stand around, you don't know enough about baseball to ask a question.

It's all about anticipation. On defense you have to be ready for anything. Tell me about football, where the clock ticks while players shuffle off to huddles and jog on and off the field and stand frozen in position while the QB calls signals, and where the games end with players walking off the field while the game clock ticks down. In a sixty minute football game, there's maybe 12 minutes of real action.
