Consumption Collage or Assumption College? Are Filipinos getting dumb?

Someone asked recently (here in Yahoo Answers Travel) if the Arroyo government will fall. She said that alumnus like her from the "Consumption Collage" would like President Arroyo to continue her term. I was shocked!! Is the Philippine educational system falling apart?

Update:

Intentionally? I would not complain if this was the first time I have encountered this. I have been a member of Yahoo Answers since last year and let me tell you this, it is getting worst every month. And to think there is a spell check feature in Yahoo Answers.

...my assumptionista friends would certainly balk at this affront to their beloved alma mater. what incumbents do should not be taken as a reflection of our educational system. there's nothing wrong with having graduated at assumption convent. her high school has nothing to do with what has gone awry in her presidency.

and no, we filipinos are NOT getting dumb.

Recently, here in Yahoo! Answers Travel, someone asked whether the Arroyo government will fall. That person said that "Consumption College" alumnae like her want President Arroyo to finish her term.

In the context of your statement-- that I have taken the liberty to modify--, is the issue really as shocking? And, does this thing give us a real perspective on the quality of our country's educational system?

Are Filipinos really getting dumb? Perhaps looking at your own question will give you a fair assessment.

PS: what does the spelling checker have to do with anything?

what bugs me more isn't the reference to "consumption college" but the misuse of alumnus. arroyo is a woman, therefore the proper term should be alumna. so if, among the many answers given, this has yet to be spotted, then maybe we are really getting dumber. :)

of course that person intentionally mispelled the school's name.

anyway, i think assumption college apart from being known as the haven of rich college girls are known for nothing else. not academic excellence not social activities not producing business leaders etc. so gloria arroyo being the most famous ( who else is there ) product of the school made all her classmates to rally around this evil person despite all the scams involving her. imagine one of her classmate saying ' gloria being called an evil perosn is like me being called a prostitute ' or another saying ' gloria could not do those things because during our elementary days gloria offered to help me in our math subject ' talk about being cocooned and shielded form the rest of the world, this school must be it.

Well, that its also my concern. I've noticed that some Filipino youths in Metro Manila cannot even speak or write in proper Filipino or English. I am no grammar or linguist but simple subject verb agreement and spelling are basics.

I also hate the "txt" spelling I see sometimes on Yahoo! Answers and on other online forums and blogs.

Why not? I used to live around the corner from Consolation College. (I guess that's when you first don't make it in a good one).

BTW ~ the correct word is worse and not worst.

it's 'alumni' or 'alumnae' not 'alumnus'

'if this were' not 'if this was'

    'getting worse' not 'getting worst'

did you really have an acute stress reaction when you encountered the phrase?

sorry, i didn't want to nitpick. i just wanted to assure myself that no, i'm not getting dumb

Source(s): no offense, ms tranquil. & sorry, once i get started picking nits, i can't stop. by the gist of his statement, it is not possible that this is the 1st time he has 'encountered this.' & in a contrary-to-fact protasis the rules of the subjunctive mood apply. ergo, 'if this were'

Some corrections were already pointed out.

    "...if this was..." is correct.

My apologies to those who might get offended.

    you didn't get her right.

the education system is not falling apart

it is your sense of humor that's deteriorating.

leave that so much seriousness sometimes.

    its dangerous to ones health
