Why do we say bless you everytime someone sneezes?

Can anyone tell me where this saying originated? Its a myth that its said because your heart stops beating every time you sneeze. That is a medical impossibility. If your heart stopped, you would drop to the floor. Any thoughts where this came from?

It's the same as when we cover our mouths when we yawn. People used to believe that it had to do with the devil. With sneezing it was the devil coming out of you. With yawning it was to prevent the devil getting into you. So, you get blessed when you sneeze out the devil. When you hear the German version (which I can't spell), it means good health.

It has something to do with trying to ward off evil spirits that supposedly are more likely to gain entry on the sneeze...

No, it's because way back when people thought you were releasing demons when you sneezed, therefore they blessed you afterwards.
