Do i need two submersable pumps for my pond w/ skimmer?

I am in the process of setting up my first pond. So a lot of this is new to me. Although somewhat familiar w/ basics from seeing my dads and books.

My question, my pond will incorporate a 4200 gph submersible pump, skimmer and biological filtration. If my pump is on the bottom of pond will i need a pump at the bottom of my skimmer as well. Can this accomplish the same thing if it is located in an area where water will naturally flow to it. I plan to have a waterfall w/ a stream emptying into a pond about 2300g. I thought i might be able to locate the skimmer in an advantageous spot in the pond. Maybe allowing me to save on electricity. If not how big of a pump for skimmer box. Thanks

depending on how you hook up the pump you can get by with one and it may be split so it goes two places. I have two pumps in my setup. One goes to a waterfall and the second one goes to a second pond which then drains into the one that the waterfall is in. I think it all depend on your setup and how you plan to use it. the pump you have has enough GPH to be able to split the pump again depending what your waterfall is.

good luck and enjoy the beauty of it

You don't really even need a skimmer at all. Read my articles at http://www.squidoo.com/pondlady for all the reason why you don't. But even if you decide on having one, you only need one pump. From the skimmer, the hose goes over the waterfall. The pump would go in the skimmer, not in the bottom of the pond. The 4200 gph pump is a fine size for what you want.

I agree with the pond lady, the single pump you have should be fine for what you are putting together. Putting the pump in the skimmer box will pull the floating debris into the box. I, myself, do like having the skimmer. It makes Fall cleanup here in MI a lot easier :-)

To intake hose in the skimmer is to close to the surface the whirlpool sounds you hears is the intake hose sucking air through the water from the surface.
