There are already segregated buses, and they're quite popular. There are separate entrances and a curtain in the middle.
There is a commandment that men are not supposed to look at women who they are not married or related to. This is the purpose it serves. Women and men are also separated at Orthodox synagogues (women sit up higher because they're 'closer to G-d').

It's only on some routes that service ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, and then, if I recall correctly, only some of the buses. By far most Orthodox Jews do not subscribe to the need for separate buses.

No it doesn't surprise me because it is the custom of Orthodox and Hasidic Jews to sit in separate areas of the schul (synagogue). This has been a custom of Jews for millenia. When the apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth the following found in 1 Cor. 14:34, "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law."
He stated this because at the time women always sat in a separate section of the synagogue and if the women had a question about something she would call out to her husband and disrupt the service. This scripture does mean in any way that women can't be preachers, missionaries, or work for the kingdom of God.

They have a the freedom to CHOOSE whether to use the divided buses or not. Unlike some Islamic countries where there is NO CHOICE.

Just in the ultra orthodox parts of israel.
Yeah, pretty terrible. A few months ago there was a case of a woman beaten because she refused to move to the back of the bus...
Does this remind you of anything?
