Does weight loss contribute to sinus issues with the voice?
I recently stepped up my days in the gym. Even though I was normal sized (about an 8) I recently started dropping alot of weight from going to the gym 5 days a week (only for an hour). Now, I wear between a 4/6. I had no intention on losing that much weight, and I still eat!!!
What I have noticed is that I have had increased sinus issues that is really affecting my voice. It has been going on since November. Since I sing for a living, it is really putting a wrench in what I am doing. I FINALLY got an appt. with an ENT this Monday, and Presnosolone only worked temporarily. It is bad enough I need to re-learn my breath support. I haven't struggled with this since my junior year in college. It is getting on my last nerves. Is it weight related? Or is it because the weather has been so off that it is triggering sinus issues. I use a Nasal Rinse, I drink 8 to 10 glasses of water everyday.
I have 5 performances coming up this month. The show can't go on without me in them. Any ideas?

dear Ms. Chick,
I've asked a lot of my professional colleagues. A couple of them are weight yo-yos, constantly fighting the battle of the bulge. One of them (male) also has sinus conditions with or without diet. He doesn't seem to think it's related. Another, who usually has no sinus issues ( despite her diets) can't seem to find a correlation. One woman, who had a daughter recently attributed her sinus problems to the pregnancy.
Another lady, who remains heavy, always something going on with her sinuses.
I don't think there's a direct correlation. I would ascribe it to the fact that your body is re-adjusting itself, especialy the muscle: fat ratio. If you are doing extra cardio on machines, make sure you keep time for stretching your lower back muscles, and keeping them limber.
Best wishes for all your concerts this month! We here on YA know that you will do a stunning job.

I found the book to be very informative and easy to read.
I've lost 17 pounds in 12 days, I'm just concerned that I'm losing too much weight, too quickly. I will admit I haven't followed the guide exactly. I'm not sticking perfectly to the listed foods and meal plans (but mostly) and doing very little exercise, but the weight keeps flying off.
It clearly works and if I'd followed it exactly I think it would scare the living daylights out of me because of the amount that I'd lose. So thanks again for the information. I've never purchased anything like this before because they are usually full of trash, but 3WD has been a pleasant surprise.

All I can do is guess that, as you lost the weight, not only around your waist, but neck, face, and even inside your nose. and you may have gained muscle in some areas, but lost the muscle tone in your neck. It may also be you worked yourself too hard, and I guess your doing a treadmill, heavy continuous breathing through the mouth can effect your vocal cords. You may have even developed a sinus alergy from the gym.. I would cool it with the gym, normally its every other day,.Good luck with your voice. Dont get depressed cause your voice will get worse.

pick up a 5 or 10 pound weight at the gym and visualize that weight coming off holding the weight in your hands helps bring home just how heavy even 5 pounds of extra fat can be

ive never heard of that happening to anybody because of weight loss and ive been singing for a while to, i think it may have something to do with the weather my voice isnt what it is right now cuz of it and it may have to do with the way your losing weight and your body maybe used to your old weight and how to support your breath from that weight rather then less weight.

I dropped 8 pounds in a week, and my voice went kaflouee. Maybe our instruments can only handle subtle changes over a longer period of time. Imagine if a violinist's hand shrunk by even 5% in a week. They'd be a wreck too.
Good luck.

(Sounds crazy, I know) I dealt with this issue before too...My voice teacher, said the added "girth" (her word) makes it easier for breath control. That could be why a lot of Opera singers are heavier. I had to relearn my breath control techniques and support too. I could be sinuses too.Try this...8oz of orange juice and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I hope that helps some.
