Why do so many people feel that science and religion are at odds?

When the greatest men in the fields of mathematics, physics, etc. were firm believers in God? There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there and it makes little logical sense.

Update:

To acid zebra: because God did it is EXACTLY the position Newton took, as he could not explain all physical phenomena! Please READ Newton.

    You are right.

    Great minds meet.

    Small minds differ.

Great scientists know that they are ignorant.

Great saints know that they are ignorant.

    So they meet.

People who know nothing about science consider superstitions as religion.

They who know nothing about religion assume attachment to dust as science.

    So they differ.

Historically, the foundations of western science were laid by polytheistic Greeks. When Christianity gained dominance in the west, it figures most scientists in the time period were Christians (not in the least because the nice Christians would throw a heresy trial party for anyone daring to disagree). But unlike current-day "creationists" they checked their religion at the door to the lab.

I don't see "so therefore God diddit" in Newton's Principia, do you? Not to mention that in his time with the level of knowledge of the universe they possessed, belief in god(s) was still a viable proposition.

Science and Religion are the two great seekers of truth. No genuine truth of one can ever conflict with any genuine truth of the other. Truth cannot conflict with truth.
