Van Key computer chip?

I lost my keys a while ago. They have a computer chip in them. Got new set made. Found old one. Tried it. Still worked. Now, the van won't always start with the old keys, but sometimes does. Did I confuse the computer or something?

Is it a proximity key, or one that responds to the computer only when inserted into a door or the ignition? If you have both on you and they are proximity keys then the new one might have stronger signal, hence canceling out the older key's ability to function. This may be the case since the new one likely has a stronger signal to the computer (newer battery, stronger signal). This is just a theory as I know computers, but am no expert on remote chips for car keys.
