Most healthy dog food?
What dry food do you think is most healthy for dogs? A food that you could get from Target.
Thanx everybody! I don't have a dog, but I am planning to be a vet sooo I am really educated on cats and I want to study about dogs now. I don't think Iams is a good brand. Purina One sounds good.

Target doesnt sell good dog food. Good foods include Wellness, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul, etc. You can buy these at pet food stores.

Assuming that 'Target' is a supermarket, most supermarkets don't stock the better brands of dogfood, and very few stock the very best. Don't pay more for a brand like Eukanuba, Iams or Purina One: look at the list of ingredients and you'll see they're no better nutritionally than a cheaper rival brand.
Good brands include Solid Gold, Canidae, Wellness, Innova and The Organic Kitchen - I'm sure other people will be able to add to that list.
Good petstores are most likely to be good suppliers, and buying in bulk from an online petstore is also a good idea if you don't live near shopping facilities - often a moneysaver, too.
Ideally you want a food free of fillers such as wheat, corn and soya, or only in small quantities: most dogs don't digest them well and they're simply added to bulk cheap food out cheaply without being nutritious. Meat and/or fish or meat/fish meals should make up the first three ingredients on the list. Avoid foods which contain things called "meat and animal derivatives" and "mechanically recovered meat" because it basically means unidentifiable bits of poor-quality meat.
Watch out for claims about a food being the leading brand, recommended by vets, best seller blah blah blah - until you've looked at the ingredients. Advertising slogans and claims don't a good food make. This site may also help you weigh up different branded foods:

However, it's also worth remembering that all dogs are different, and that some dogs can do almost as well on a supermarket-own brand as another dog would do on a luxury brand.

Stores, like Target, don't sell very good-quality dog food. It's full of fillers, corn, and by-products. Try going to a feed store and look for a brand that has meat (not by-products) as at least one of the first three ingredients, no corn, and little fillers. Some good brands are Wellness, Canidae, Innova, and Merrick-just to name a few. There are many more.

You can't get decent dog food at a supermarket or Target or Walmart, just highly advertised stuff that's mostly corn meal and artificial preservatives.
Go to a large pet store or feed store and get some decent dry for your dog - I feed Canidae to all mine, it's excellent.

sorry but you can't find any suitable dog foods at target. Maybe you should try Newmans own organics. It's beggining to appear in grocery stores everywhere. I even saw it in the food mart in the gas station.

Target, to my knowledge, doesn't sell any good food. But Petco sells Eagle Pack and Natural Balance - two of the best foods out there.

The very best dog food, is to give your dog boiled turkey and rice in the evening and dried dog food in the morning. The amount will depend on the breed and size. It is very important that you get your dog's diet right, as it could be the difference between a happy fulfilled dog or an overactive miserable dog. Don't overfeed, dogs have to be in good shape, give them lots of exercise.

I'm sorry, but if you are that interested in the health of your dog and overall whelbeing (vs the crap chaina makes for them to eat) you would make them thier own meals every day - there are multiple resource on the web that are rice based meals that you can make on the weekends and have a week supply for them.

I use Purina One...Lamb & Rice flavor...You can get this at Target...its not that cheap generic stuff and its not that fancy Petco stuff. I have had several opinions (vets included) on this and I've been told its a good dog food....the proof is in the poop.
