the sensor on the transmission is the output speed sensor. it sends the output shaft speed to the pcm to calculate governor pressure for shifting. the speed sensor on top of teh rear diff measures the speed of the differential carrier, sends the message to the abs controller and to the pcm, and the speed message is bussed to the cluster. most likely your rear speed sensor is bad, most likely your abs and brake lights are on too. if replacing that sensor doesn't help, you have a deeper electrical problem. i have never seen or heard of any problems with the cluster itself.

Be sure you clean the sensors connector wire contacts bec a vehicle that age is bound to have tons of bad grounds , corrosion and bad contacts on any plug in connections. Plus they use crappy quality wiring in dodges in general so you could simply have a wire that is badly corroded inside itself. I go by one main rule when replacing any parts on dash like clusters " can you buy a good used one and take it out yourself at an auto do it yourself wreckers "? Those are pretty easy and simple to replace so if you find the cluster bad don't hesitated to get a used one bec new their expensive and wreckers give warranty's. In fact if you call around you might find a wreckers that allows you not only to take the parts off yourself but also take any parts you want out , as long as you can carry them out yourself for one low flat price. Great time to get a few extra parts for back up or any needed parts .

I hope this helps you and i wish you the best of luck but please don't forget to try cleaning the sensors contacts thoroughly before spending money.

i have an 01 dodge pickup, and to be honest, i have not paid attenion to how the speedometer works. but on my chrysler car, the wire got pulled into. where at first i could not find the problem and changed the speed sensor. then found i had current returning from the speed sensor. but not up to the plug.

1996 to 2000 model dodge trucks are well known for having instrument cluster problems. The most likely cause is a bad cluster but--------you can get your favorite mechanic to use a scan tool to test the cluster for a modest fee before you go buying an expensive cluster. Just keep in mind that those "universal" scanners that you can buy at the corner cheap parts supplier cannot do anything like that it must be a high end (and expensive) professional scanner>

the dodge trucks has 2 speed sensors. one on the tranny and one on the rear end. so its the one on the rear end thats bad. and never heard of them having instrament cluster problems. so ask for the one thats ontop the rearend and it should fix the problem.

Then I would believe the cluster is bad....

    Based on what you said.

I would buy a obdII scanner that does the trouble codes while giving you rpms, mph, etc....

Crown vic with the same same problems...

    Have a good one!

    Hope this helps!

the cable might be broken that is connected in the back of the speedometer or the insert in the back of the speedometer may be striped. so check the cable first before u do anything. Good luck!

Source(s): experienced in that situation before . been there, seen it,and done it.

The speedo cable may be binding up. Just replace it. That should do the trick. They aren't repairable as far as I know.

Take back to the store and or get another because it must be broken if you know how to replace it right.

My son just replaced his and it was broken and auto zone replaced it.
