Paxil Side effects, please help, urgent!?
My doctor put me on 20mg Paxil friday. I'm not really have any serious side effects that I've been reading about, but I can't sleep. This is what will happen: I take the pill at 10AM, go to sleep at 6-7PM, then wake up at midnight and can't fall asleep.
When I wake up, I feel SO tired, even as I type this I feel like I could fall asleep simply by closing my eyes. But I can't, no matter how tired I feel, my body refuses to sleep.
I don't know what to do, I go back to my night shift job this Tuesday, (9PM to 7AM) I really need to get this fixed, I can't function at work without any sleep!
Thank you!

paxil is a seritonin reuptake inhibitor than can affect sleep, but so can depression. You may need to change the time that you take it to later. it takes up to 6 weeks to start seeing an effect in your depression. dont stop taking it without consulting your doctor. You need to maintain a routine. avoid taking naps during the day. your body will wear out from not enough sleep and you will start to get into a pattern. try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. avoid caffeine.

I was put on Paxil a long while ago, and I had this same effect. I couldn't agree more with fire-eyed maiden's advice to try and take it at a different time of day. This is what my doctor had advised me to do and it worked. Or maybe keep taking it at the same time since you're switching your shift and will be sleeping at a different time soon and you'll be awake at the right time rather than trying to change back.
And keep in mind that you've just started this medication, so it can take up to 2 weeks for your system to get used to it. If you're still having problems, talk with your doctor. Paxil might not be what's right for you or your dose may just have to be adjusted. Medication doesn't affect all people inthe same way, so there some trial and error to get what will work for you. It can get frustrating until you find the right medication and dose combination but you'll get there.
Good luck to you.

Paxil must be an extremely powerful anti-depressant if at 20mg you can't sleep. Is your doctor planning on increasing the dosage? At any rate, why don't you try some valerian root, an herbal relaxant that calms the central nervous system. I've used it for years without any negative side effects. You can buy it at any Walgreens (Nature Made). And you can take it at two and three times its suggested dosage, if you need to. Hope this helps.

all antidepressants cam go ways, each body reacts differently, for some it makes them sleepy and some it hypes them up. I've taken them for many years, and have experience, the clue is to be seeing a psychiatrist as they are the experts on head meds, General practictioners don't have enough training in head meds. And, I never start at full dose no matter what, I take only like 1/4-1/2 for 3 days and after 3 days it is in your blood stream and you will feel the effects, then you can up it another 1/4 on the 4th day and up another 1/4 on the 7th day etc. I find that starting them at full does usually causes people to not take them because it makes your head fell weird. It takes about 3 unfun weeks to get balanced on them.
The real answer is to find the best psychiatrist that really knows his head meds. Just like you would find the best surgeon for your surgery. And they are not easy to get on, but the benefits when you find the right one, are wonderful. So hang in there, but talk to your dr. often, call up, it is your head and brain !!

Do not take anything over the counter for sleep, not even herbs until you consult your dr./psychiatrist. He/she can give you something for sleep that will work properly with your type of medication.I was on Paxil and my psychiatrist gave me medicine for the nausea side affect, and it worked.Talk to your dr./psychiatrist first thing Monday morning if at least by phone.
