what is the relationship between global warming and the meat industry? vegan theory? please explain?
I know that we have been having global warming since the last Ice age. I also know that we had a mini ice age in the 1800's ? but I do not understand how the meat industry can affect global warming?

The UN report referenced by posters here was made on Feb 2006.But a report by the same UN committee on Feb 2007(exactly one year LATER) stated that global warming is being caused by mostly human activity with 90% certainty (with the use of the term "most likely) by increased greenhouses gasses due to inceased burning of fossil fuels (the number is about 75% in the US if I remember correctly) In fact, in the 21 page report, you will not find a single reference to the meat industry or "cattle" or any page referring to animals in general or any animal in particular.
You just have to separate the propoganda from the real facts since most of the other references are from anti-animal industry sources and/or organizations such as PETA or VegSoc etc.

It's because a huge amount of animals, such as cows, are reared by the meat industry and they produce an awful lot of methane (they fart, big style), this is apparently affecting the ozone layer and increasing global warming, so if we were to stop eating meat or eat fewer animals, the meat industry would rear fewer animals, therefore, less methane. So I've been told.

In 2006, the United Nations released a groundbreaking report that said that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combined. The vast majority of global warming is caused by carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. As it turns out, raising animals for food is the single largest source of both methane and nitrous oxide emissions. These gases come primarily from farmed animals' digestive processes and from their manure.

Cows out gas a lot of methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas like CO2 so increasing the cattle for steaks and milk increases the amount of methane that we produce. There are some articles in Science and Nature about it.

Farm animals produce a lot of methane gas which is a major contributor to the green house effect. A cow, for example, excretes about 30 lbs. of fecal waste a day and you multiply that by thousands of cows...well...and that's just cows...there are also methane emissions from pigs, chickens and sheep. Also all the grain that is produced to feed cows (it takes 300 lbs. of grain to produce 1 lb of hamburger) uses a lot of diesel fuel to fuel the farm equipment needed to harvest it.
