Anyone know what the "contrast ratio" is on LCD TV's?

I am about to purchase a new 46" LCD. Several of the models look good to me. Some have a 5000:1, or 10000:1 contrast ratio. If the number is bigger does that mean that it is a good thing? BTW: Currently looking at a 15000:1 TV.

I'm guessing you're looking at a Sharp Aquos TV?

The contrast ratio is important. It is the maximum difference between the blackest black and whitest white signal, and I think a measure of time is included in there somewhere too. That said, getting higher numbers may be a marketing game. There's a thing called

DSP, it means Digital Signal Processing. It's what makes BOSE sound systems sound so unique. It's also what makes a display with a contrast ratio of 5000:1 able to claim it has 15000:1 and that is what's going on in the Sharp Aquos (and other brands) display. It does produce a great image and frankly, that should be what matters most, In my humble opinion.

However - is it worth the extra several hundred bucks over

    one with a 5000:1 or 7000:1 ratio?

That, I will leave up to you and your wallet. Good luck and happy viewing!

I heard that contrast ratio is the most important thing about HDTV. The more the better.
