As a patrol officer have you ever had someone talk themselves INTO a ticket?

In other words, has there ever been a time when you pulled someone over to maybe even just give them a warning, but when you got to them they were such a**holes or so disrespectful that you ended up giving them a ticket. I think that would be kind of funny. Especially if you told them after the fact they did it to themselves.

All the time. I always got out of my unit without my ticket book with the intention that a good attitude would get the driver a warning. After they are through bitching about how they pay my salary, I ask them if they notice anything missing. When they realize it's my ticket book, I tell them that I'm going to retrieve it from my car now. They usually realize what they've done.

I pulled a lady over once for doing 75km/hr in a 40km/hr school zone. She told me that I "should be out catching murderers and rapists" and that "she didn't have time for this" and that people speed in her neighbourhood and we are "never around to catch them." She's tearing a strip off of me for her speeding!

I went back to the car to write the ticket and had every intention on reducing the speed and fine ( to fifteen over, no points 1/4 of the fine) because I reduce almost all of my tickets. She came to the car knocked on the window and demanded to know why "it was taking so long" and told me once again what she though I should do.

I smiled at her and said "Ma'am, I'm writing as fast as I can"

I set aside the ticket with the reduced fine and wrote her a new one for the full amount.

Yes, it happens all the time. I'm not big on attitude tickets, but sometimes if they want to be jerks, well I can play back.

However, in many cases I will just give them a 5 minute speech and still let them go with a warning as I originally planned...Showing them that I am the bigger man.

The purpose of traffic enforcement is to obtain compliance.

If someone refuses to accept responsibility, and is argumentative, I seriously doubt a warning would change their behavior. If I feel that is the case, that makes it much easier to hold them accountable with a citation.

As a matter of rule, I never tell someone they talked themselves into a ticket. No sense getting them even more wound up.
