When I started teaching my horse tricks, I started with easy ones.
The first one was to give a kiss. I started with a piece of apple, carrot, whatever your horse likes. Put it in your hand, let him/her know it is there. Put your hand under your chin with your chin resting on the back of your hand and your palm with the treat in it facing down. Stand in front of your horse and say, kiss, and smooch. The moment he lifts his nose, even in an attempt, stop, pet and give treat. Keep repeating this and every time he/she understands a little more then ask for more. Now I want a kiss and I want your muzzle to touch my lips. After he/she gets that then ask for a kiss and his muzzle stays on your lips.
So just progress is step by step. Pretty soon you won't have to use a treat and just tell your horse to kiss and he will give you one.
The next one I taught him was to shake "hands" Face your horse and go for his right leg, just as if you are going to shake a humans hand. Lean forward and put your right hand around his knee and say shake, pull on the knee and "irritate" the shoulder. Meaning, not hurting but a tapping or a poke with your finger. Once he/she attempts to lift he leg at the knee, release and give a treat.
The progression needs to be that the attempts are rewarded, then ask for more, the leg to be picked up by the knee and held for a second, then holding the knee and pumping up and down like shaking a hand. The end result will be holding out your hand and saying shake and he lifts his leg, knee up, leg down for you to shake.
It's fun cause then you can "introduce" him/her to people. When you take people to meet then you ask them would you like to shake (horses name) hands? When your horse hears the word shake he will offer his leg to be shook. In the up and down motion. People get a kick out of it.
Source(s): This is SO much fun to teach! I taught my first horse this 19 years ago. He is now 20, I still have him and he still responds to all his cues perfectly! Lots of fun!!! Enjoy! - 7 years ago
I taught my horse to circle. First put a halter on and lead them in a circle then let the circle get bigger. take a stick or whip and tap, poke, or crack it behind your horse. Don't hurt them and don't scare them to much. do this more to get them to go faster. A bridle works to and for some more stubborn horses it works better.
Make sure you don't get them to scared of the whip/stick or they might spook every time they see it.
Good Luck!

My horse doesn't have any "tricks" really, but he can roll a barrel around with his nose.
And when he gets bored (if we stand around for too long) he'll start shaking his and smacking his lips together. =]
I'm starting to teach him to lay down.

might not work for your horse unless incredibly smart
