Why are team fans so jaded?

Ok now I know you love your favorite stars on your favorite teams. But you need to look at things objectively. Brett Favre is not the best QB to roam this planet. Emmitt Smith isn't the greatest HB. Why do you people not see this regarding your team? Pack fans say Favre is the best. Cowboys say Emmitt is the best. Get some facts straight. They had longevity I grant them that, but neither of them was better than a lot of others at their position. Where has all the objectivity gone?

Update:

I never said they weren't good. But I don't think either of them are a top 5 choice. Compare average season stats and they aren't that great.

Update 2:

I am a Lions fan, but I don't argue someone to be the best based on complete bias. Barry Sanders had more yards per year than Walter Payton or Emmitt Smith. Fact. He played less than both of them too. Fact. Brett Farve played for 17 years. How many better QBs played for that long? None. Fact. I'm just saying statistically they have no evidence to say they are better than everyone else, except that they played about 5 years longer than other people at their position.

Update 3:

Greggy that's exactly my point. I'm not saying Favre wasn't a good QB, or didn't even have a good last year, I'm talking about people that say he's the best of all time.

Update 4:

ah TJ, you did so well until you expanded lol. I can't even justify either of them being in the top 5... possibly favre at #5.

    You are correct.

I have never understood it... and I never understand those who question your fanhood because you can be realistic. No team is the best team with the best players at every position with the best coach ALL the time.

Now with guys like you mentioned, I have no qualm with them being mentioned as the greats, or among the best (or in the top 10, etc), but it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to annoint ANYONE the GOAT. Why? Simply because times change, rules change, SITUATIONS change.

For instance...you can't say a guy is the best simply cause he has the most yardage. Why? Because his team night have handed the ball off 90% of the time, and played in a weak division, and he had a better O-line than the "#2" guy. You really can't compare, numerically one to another.

I live in the heart of non-objective land...Columbus Oh. Every year, the Buckeyes are the best team ever, the best team that season, they have better players than anyone else, and Tressel is God. Until they go to a Bowl game vs the SEC.

    WTF ever.

Favre was a great player for 17 years..no small feat... and he should be considered ONE of the Greats, the Legends of the NFL.

    BUT>>>>

How many seasons did he lead the league in passing yards?

    Touchdowns? Wins? SuperBowls? ...oh...Interceptions?

Youu need to find a real measuring stick for you fan-hood...

*Greggy..you are no homer... you are very correct.

*Naw... Favre is about 7 or 8... around the same realm as Marino..remember, Longevity had alot ot do with his career stats too... but he also had some Amazing single seasons...something Favre rarely did.

And Emmit.... ennhhh top 20? Maybe...his career stats DO earn him consideration, but he is No Jim Brown, Barry Sanders or Sweetness, that is for sure.

*Lemony...but this WAS a short one.......

There’s a lot to be said about longevity. I was very sad when Emmitt broke the rushing record, because Walter Payton didn’t need to hang around for decades to set it in the first place. There have been many more spectacular, more dominant RBs in league history than Emmitt. Barry Sanders, OJ Simpson, Jim Brown, Sweetness, LT, Gayle Sayers – just to name a few. I think the case is a little bit different with Favre. Even if he’s not in the top five all-time, he’s definitely in the elite group of seven or eight (Marino, Brady, Manning, Young, Elway, Montana, Favre). Emmitt hung on far beyond his best years – Favre’s last year was arguably his best year. And don’t accuse me of being a homer fawning over my favorite player – I'm a die-hard Bears fan.

justin, Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl, how is that stepping up and making big plays when needed?

You're right though, I'm wondering the same thing. Farve can be looked at 2 ways. Packers fans only see his TD record, and people who don't like the Packers only see his INT record. He's not the best ever, but he's not a bad player. I hate even more when fans stretch out and say whoever was their team was the best ever, but it's not gonna stop. Not everyone knows so much about football, they just hear the media all over Farve and Smith, and jump on their bandwagon's. It's mostly the bangwagoners who think they're better because they root for someone that's winning that say that though.

Brett Favre is in the top 5 QBs Emmit Smith was top 5 RBs ever. Somebody who's in the top 5 is someone who can be considered the best ever.

I think I understand what you're saying...and I agree to a point; but most people have to hang on to something. Look at it like most religions in the world..it's there to comfort and to have something to base your hopes on. That's what people do to their "star" players..whatever team it might be. Some are legitimate stars..others are just "good"...but either way it is a glimmer of light in this dark...dark world.

    Dramatic..but true.
