When did R&B change?

I'm a huge fan of R&B, soul, and funk from the 50's ranging to the 80's, but somewhere along the line it all changed. Gone were the instrumentation, the funky sounds, and blaring horns, and they were replaced by an alien sounding beat machine. So my question is twofold. First, when/why did it change? And second, are there any bands or artists out there today that still have that old fashoned sound?

1987 when Teddy Riley brought out the group Guy. to my knowledge that was the beginning of New Jack Swing which was supposed to be a fusion of R&B and hip hop.

Just look that guy up, Uptown records and Andre Harrell on Wikipedia.

I'm pretty sure it changed because kids like him (when he was a kid) liked both R&B and rap so he wanted to mix them.

(Puff daddy was around in that time too)

I think alot of artist started using synthesizer's in the late 70's and early 80's and thats probably the change you are referring too ... there where more drum machines and synths used and less studio bands... but even tho music went more electronic in the 80's .. the decade still produced alot of r&b classics IMO

Great Q, man! Many cite artists like John Legend & Brian McKnight as having one foot firmly in the old school.

But what *I'M* tired of, man; The totally cliched undulating, 'vocal acrobatic' thing. Recent suspect would include C.Aguilera & all her sound alikes.

It was cool when it was different back in the 70s & 80s, but EVERY r&b & pop (usually female) singer does it now.

I would say the late 90's it changed a great deal. I haven't heard many r&b songs in the past few years with the exception of India Arie, Musiq Soulchild and Tamia

Lenny Kravitz has one called "It Ain't Over Til It's Over" and if I didn't know better I'd swear it was the Delfonics or Stylistics era...

R&B originally meant 'Rhythm & Blues'

To a lot of people now, it means 'Rhythm & Bass'.

    I'll stick with the originals!

if you listen to all the new r&b songs non of them say I LOVE YOU
