TriCare Prime and new baby?
I have tricare (hubby is military) and i was wondering how we do all of the stuff involved with setting up a pediatrician for the baby once he is born. I am not having my son at a military hospital, but there is one nearby. Do I call Tricare before he is born or what?

You call Tricare after the baby is born. You'll have to get the baby enrolled in DEERS as soon as possible after he's born.

I have never called tricare before, the hospital submits it and tricare pays, then the hospital sends a bill for the remainder, usually not to much. Make sure you have your hubby take in his birth certificate and ss card to enroll the baby on deers. The baby will be covered for the first year, but still good to set him up on tricare as soon as possible. Congrats. What branch of service is your hubby? mine is army stationed at ft hood.

Navy, and son is 7 months old and another one on the way. Yes tricare will cover the hospital bill. But I disagree with the ASAP deers part.
In GA where our son was born, as soon as you registered your child in deers they were given a primary care physician, a Pediatrician. That was who tricare said they had to go to. I called tricare from the hospital because the hospital required paperwork showing who we were going to see for our 1 week app. Tricare told me because of my zipcode I might not have to use the base doctors, but time/paperwork would determine that. The lady on the phone recommended doctor offices that were approved by tricare for me to go to. We wrote down all the names she recommended and then asked every doctor their opinion while we were still in the hostipal. That helped alot. Also she recommended not to enroll our son in deers until the very end. Don't quote me, but if I remember correctly it's 60 days before the military will not pay a medical bill for a newborn.
So we enrolled our son in deers 2 days before the deadline. So we got to go to the best Dr we could find on the tricare list until we enrolled him in deers and they covered all the bills. Was a good thing because our son had complications and got sick. The pediatrician sent us to a large childrens hospital. We didn't have to deal with the military sending us all over the place with no results, like my husband has to deal with. In the end all is well. Military paid every cent and it was alot. Tricare would not turn a bill down no matter where it care from on a newborn for Dr visits before the deers deadline.
Some might disagree about enrolling late, but it worked for us in our situation. We were nervous about the military pediatrician seeing a 1 week old that was sick. In the end the civilian pediatrician became our permanent pediatrician after we requested it through tricare.

My hubby was a Marine and we had our last child off base and Tri Care actually called me when I was in the hospital. I never figured out how or why but I'm assuming that it has to do with the paperwork that I filled out before I had the baby. BUT if they don't call you... YOU MUST call DEERS ASAP! They will direct you what to do and how to do it from that point on.
At C.P. here in CA when we were there we all had to see a family care doctor so they took care of me during the pregnancy and then the baby after it was born.
Weird I know but hey thats the military for you, and thank goodness you won't be delivering at the Naval Hospital on C.P. thats a nightmare in itself!
Good luck and congrats on the events to come!!

I believe you call tricare after the birth, but I'm not sure. I had my daughter in a military hospital though and my husband took care of the rest.

I just had my baby six months ago and they asked me what pediatrician I wanted. So you would at least have to have the name and they gave me the phone number to call. I had to have the appointment scheduled before I left the hospital. You have 30 days to register your baby in DEERS. When you do that you can decide if you want to continue taking your baby to the pediatrician or on post.

Since you are having him at a civilian hospital I would call TriCare just to be sure!!

you call Tricare after and enroll him in Deers, it will be easier if your husband deals with it he can get it done faster than you and if you want to dont forget his ss #
