Is it dangerous to drive old cars? ('92 ford taurus)?

My brother is getting a new car, and I was hoping to take his old one, which is a '92 ford taurus. My mom thinks it's too dangerous to drive because it's so old, though, and because it was originally her car which she gave to my brother, it's her choice.

She is afraid that something will go wrong causing me to have an accident-- the brakes or the steering mostly, I think. I'm a college student, my classes and job are within walking distance, but if I want to go anywhere else, I'm out of luck because it's a small town with no public transportation or bus service out of the town.

So, is she being unreasonable about this? She's always been a little weird about me and driving, but does she have a legitimate serious worry?

Update:

It's got something like 300,000 miles on it, btw.

I think that's more the issue.

lol. old is not the issue, usually. it is your own driving skill and basically maintaining the car that makes it safe. true, new cars with 100 airbags, abs, traction control, etc are great, but older cars in good condition are still ok.

    cheers!

The Ford Taurus is a smart shoppers' car. For many years, the Taurus was the car of choice of all the rental companies. Enterprise, Hertz, etc, would all buy thousands of them, and only keep them for 20,000 miles. Therefore, the car lots were basically flooded with good, low mileage cars. Simple supply and demand economics. An oversupply of a particular product leads to a low price for that product. The used Ford Taurus has a low retail price not because they are bad cars, but because there is so many of them. The most car for your buck. I would guess that many older folks have a Taurus because they have a better understanding of Economics 101. A good car. And no, not an old peoples car. I.'ve owned them for years.

I drive a 92 taurus it's the best car I ever had, before this I had a 79 f100 a 79 Firebird a 99 accent (hyundai) a 77 chevy truck a 72 ford truck, so mostly I have only EVER had old cars. I want to get a 60s-70s car I can muscle up a bit. I guess I like the old cars better. better workmanship back then!

Driving them is not the problem it is when you crash. As long as the brake pads, discs are ok I do not see a problem. People drive cars over 50 years old.

no,it is not dangerous at all.but still u have to check the oil every morning .u also have to fix anything wrong with it .also after opening the car u have to wait 2 min and then begin driving.and also don't hit the gas hard, hit it gently and get faster.like that u won't have a problem with it,it is totally safe.

Old cars are NOT dangerous... if they are well maintained there is nothing wrong with them..

If you don't take care of it... and just drive it til something goes wrong.. might be a little dangerous...

Does your mom want your brother to die or something? why was it okay for him to drive but not you?:)

The problem with driving old cars is that they don't have air bags. If that's not a big deal to you, then no. They're not superbly dangerous.
