Yes it is 100% legal as long as you are outside of the airport perimeter fence. Check out http://www.airliners.net/

All the information that a would-be terrorist requires about all civilian airfields is well documented and freely available. In fact, you can purchase the information from the airfield you are interested in. Just give them a call.
So, regardless of what some individual might, or might not, like it is perfectly legal to take photos. However, it may well be that on a certain day they would prefer that no photos were taken in a certain area of an airfield because of a one-off arrangement - VIP or whatever.

Sure it *should* be - as long as you are not doing so on *airport* property. The airport security can ask you to stop photographing and leave if you are on their property. However, it is best to find out if there are any sneaky laws that have been passed that would make it illegal. Better prepared than busted.

Yes its perfectly legal.
In fact, many airports, in an overture to aviation enthusiasts, have established viewing areas where many other photographers and general aviation nuts can all congregate and take pictures, swap stories, and just hang out.

It is absolutely legal. That being said, some airport security may come by and give you are hard time about it... their concern is that you may be taking pictures of airport security features like fenclines, etc....

Yep, my international airport (Sydney) even has it's own official plane-spotting lounge! Just don't clamber through the airport's perimeter fence or anything...
